Ingrid Newkirk, co-founder of PETA, on animal rights and the film about her life

Tuesday, November 20, 2007

Last night HBO premiered I Am An Animal: The Story of Ingrid Newkirk and PETA. Since its inception, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has made headlines and raised eyebrows. They are almost single-handedly responsible for the movement against animal testing and their efforts have raised the suffering animals experience in a broad spectrum of consumer goods production and food processing into a cause célèbre.

PETA first made headlines in the Silver Spring monkeys case, when Alex Pacheco, then a student at George Washington University, volunteered at a lab run by Edward Taub, who was testing neuroplasticity on live monkeys. Taub had cut sensory ganglia that supplied nerves to the monkeys’ fingers, hands, arms, legs; with some of the monkeys, he had severed the entire spinal column. He then tried to force the monkeys to use their limbs by exposing them to persistent electric shock, prolonged physical restraint of an intact arm or leg, and by withholding food. With footage obtained by Pacheco, Taub was convicted of six counts of animal cruelty—largely as a result of the monkeys’ reported living conditions—making them “the most famous lab animals in history,” according to psychiatrist Norman Doidge. Taub’s conviction was later overturned on appeal and the monkeys were eventually euthanized.

PETA was born.

In the subsequent decades they ran the Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty against Europe’s largest animal-testing facility (footage showed staff punching beagle puppies in the face, shouting at them, and simulating sex acts while taking blood samples); against Covance, the United State’s largest importer of primates for laboratory research (evidence was found that they were dissecting monkeys at its Vienna, Virginia laboratory while the animals were still alive); against General Motors for using live animals in crash tests; against L’Oreal for testing cosmetics on animals; against the use of fur for fashion and fur farms; against Smithfield Foods for torturing Butterball turkeys; and against fast food chains, most recently against KFC through the launch of their website kentuckyfriedcruelty.com.

They have launched campaigns and engaged in stunts that are designed for media attention. In 1996, PETA activists famously threw a dead raccoon onto the table of Anna Wintour, the fur supporting editor-in-chief of Vogue, while she was dining at the Four Seasons in New York, and left bloody paw prints and the words “Fur Hag” on the steps of her home. They ran a campaign entitled Holocaust on your Plate that consisted of eight 60-square-foot panels, each juxtaposing images of the Holocaust with images of factory farming. Photographs of concentration camp inmates in wooden bunks were shown next to photographs of caged chickens, and piled bodies of Holocaust victims next to a pile of pig carcasses. In 2003 in Jerusalem, after a donkey was loaded with explosives and blown up in a terrorist attack, Newkirk sent a letter to then-PLO leader Yasser Arafat to keep animals out of the conflict. As the film shows, they also took over Jean-Paul Gaultier‘s Paris boutique and smeared blood on the windows to protest his use of fur in his clothing.

The group’s tactics have been criticized. Co-founder Pacheco, who is no longer with PETA, called them “stupid human tricks.” Some feminists criticize their campaigns featuring the Lettuce Ladies and “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” ads as objectifying women. Of their Holocaust on a Plate campaign, Anti-Defamation League Chairman Abraham Foxman said “The effort by PETA to compare the deliberate systematic murder of millions of Jews to the issue of animal rights is abhorrent.” (Newkirk later issued an apology for any hurt it caused). Perhaps most controversial amongst politicians, the public and even other animal rights organizations is PETA’s refusal to condemn the actions of the Animal Liberation Front, which in January 2005 was named as a terrorist threat by the United States Department of Homeland Security.

David Shankbone attended the pre-release screening of I Am An Animal at HBO’s offices in New York City on November 12, and the following day he sat down with Ingrid Newkirk to discuss her perspectives on PETA, animal rights, her responses to criticism lodged against her and to discuss her on-going life’s work to raise human awareness of animal suffering. Below is her interview.

Fun, Fun Having A Pool Party

By David H. Urmann

Pool party will make your special celebrations more memorable. It offers a fun way of socializing to cool you down with your friends and family.

There are so many opportunities to create special times for family and friends right in your own backyard. You can create a simple or more detailed entertainment venue by the pool without the hassles of membership fees, advance reservations and extensive travel coordination and besides why compensate someone else to lease a space when your backyard pool gives the closest and best spot for hosting? You will make a big splash with a fabulous pool party that is perfect for cooling off this hot summer days. You can entertain your guest with the most at home by your pool from birthday parties to informal evenings with friends to family get together to more sophisticated celebrations.

Planning for a pool party can be one of the most interesting things that you will do because it means that you will have a lot of fun but since you will be the host of the party, there are definitely a lot of arrangements that you need to undertake. Pool party means fun but you need to be whole lot careful as there are a lot of mishaps that might occurs on or before the party itself. The most important thing that you need to focus on is the safety of your guest so you will need to have a first aid kit on your list. You need to be more creative in making your invitations so that your potential guests will not forget about your party.

Since you are planning for a pool party, you must define different areas around the pool and the different things that you must have to make your party a success. Most of the pool parties concentrate onto a lot of different preparations but sometimes they miss how significant the lightings are to make the party area truly a remarkable one. In your party you can truly make your party area look amazing if the lightings are well equipped in the specific areas of the venues, for sure your party will rock.

You also must define an area by your pool where you are going to arrange the Barbeques and pool chairs all around the pool. You will also need towels for your guest who might need it and you also need to define area where everyone can take a shower before and after they for a swim. It is really important that the pool area is really clean from dirt and not slippery, so this is something that you need to care for because it might end up in a lot of mishaps.

Your pool party must have music but be careful to match your music with the average age of your guests; your music should be something that everyone will enjoy listening to and will put them in a partying mood. Satisfy your guest with lots of foods and drinks. Since it is a pool party you can serve finger food and cocktail dishes. And as for your drinks for the guest you would not go wrong with serving a pina coladas, colas daiquiris, margaritas and beers. You can also serve sodas and fruit juices for those who don’t want to drink alcohol.

You have to give out party favors as parting gifts so that your guests would remember your party for the weeks to come. Party favors can be anything that can fit with the theme of your pool party.

Charlottetown, P.E.I. residents rally to support restaurant

Wednesday, March 30, 2005

The owners of the Noodle House Restaurant of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.), Canada were overwhelmed by community support Tuesday when the restaurant overflowed with customers, cards, flowers, and personal pleas to not leave the province.

According to CBC News Prince Edward Island, the recent outpouring of support occurred after Tommy and Lina Ko, the restaurant owners, announced they would close the restaurant and leave the province following an incident two weeks ago, when groups of up to 200 teens from two nearby schools surrounded the restaurant, pelting it with snowballs, and threatening the Kos. Charlottetown Police Chief Paul Smith told CBC PEI that his force is ready to take whatever action is necessary to crack down on the behaviour and last week started videotaping over lunchtime when most of the misbehaviour has taken place. Police noted that they have received complaints from other businesses, pedestrians, and drivers in the busy “fast food alley” and intend to seek co-operation from the schools in identifying the main culprits.

However, a CBC PEI story from October, 2002, reported the Kos asking police to do more to stop the littering and other vandalism in the area including having signs smashed, windows broken, and fireworks set off in front of their restaurant. At that time, Deputy Chief Richard Collins told CBC PEI: “You can’t have upwards of 1,500 to 2,000 students in and around that area at dinner hour and not expect for some of them to misbehave,” but promised to continue patrols and try to teach the students respect of property.

Tommy Ko told CBC News that he was overwhelmed by the support this week and in thanks put on a surprise free buffet, though customers insisted on paying anyway. Nevertheless, after fighting the harassment for some five years, the Kos say they still are not sure they want to stay.

Patient in Buckinghamshire hospital was treated in toilet, inquiry hears

Saturday, October 9, 2010

A patient at Stoke Mandeville Hospital had to be treated in a toilet after wards became overcrowded, it emerged on Friday.

The revelation came as Sheryl Pope, a Buckinghamshire National Health Service strategy director, was questioned over plans to bring healthcare to the forefront of the community. A number of councillers challenged her plans, however, claiming that the opposite had been happening.

The Bucks Free Press reported that councillors asked Pope why community hospital beds are being closed and why more clinics are being centralised. The Overview & Scrutiny Committee for Public Health Services was told that an “under-used” gynaecology clinic located at Buckingham Community Hospital was moved to Stoke Mandeville, which one councillor said was already too congested.

One person had to be treated in the toilet. I’m wondering how quickly you’re going to change it.

“You’re bringing things into Stoke, but there’s such a lot of congestion there… One person had to be treated in the toilet. I’m wondering how quickly you’re going to change it,” High Wycombe councellor Wendy Mallen asked Mrs Pope, a joint director for strategy and system reform.

It emerged that overnight wards at Chalfont’s and Gerrards Cross Hospital have remained closed since a fire risk was identified in 2008. Chalfont St Peter councillor, Bruce Allen, said of the revelation: “We’ve never had an answer from anyone of any intelligence to say what’s going to happen. We had a community hospital with 29 beds and it served us well. We keep asking when it’s going to be opened and we get nil answers. I’ve been to so many meetings and heard this nonsense. We can’t get an answer from anyone.”

Mrs Pope replied by saying that she could not give a “definitive answer,” but said that she considered Chalfont’s to be “an important part of the jigsaw.” Mrs Pope was told by the chairman of the Buckinghamshire County Council committee that she had “a duty” to inform residents of the futue of the hospital. “Unfortunately there’s always a reason for delaying it,” said Mike Appleyard. “All I’m saying is sorry, no longer. We expect you to be here within six months with some answers on the community hospitals.”

Hedley Cadd, another councillor, attacked the gynaecology transfer, saying that he and his wife were forced to travel for four hours to get to and from Stoke Mandeville Hospital, for a consultation that lasted only twenty minutes. Mrs Pope responded by saying that she was “very aware” of the issue, conceding that because the clinic is only 40% full, “those clinics are being denied to somebody else.” Mrs Pope said that it was too early to say how the Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, a new organisation which is the result of a merger between the Buckinghamshire Hospitals NHS Trust and several community hospitals, would manage local hospitals.

Anne Eden, Chief Executive of the new organisation, said: “We felt it was important to change our name to reflect the wide range of services we now offer patients from our hospitals and in community settings and in people’s own homes. In addition, discussions took place with staff across the organisation alongside patient representatives to evolve our five patient promises to reflect our extended range of services which underpin everything that we do.”

Looted, possibly contaminated body parts transplanted into USA, Canadian patients

Monday, March 20, 2006

Fears of contaminated bone and skin grafts are being felt by unsuspecting patients following the revelation that funeral homes may have been looting corpses.

Janet Evans of Marion Ohio was told by her surgeon, “The bone grafts you got might have been contaminated”. She reacted with shock, “I was flabbergasted because I didn’t even know what he was talking about. I didn’t know I got a bone graft until I got this call. I just thought they put in screws and rods.”

The body of Alistair Cooke, the former host of “Masterpiece Theatre,” was supposedly looted along with more than 1,000 others, according to two law enforcement officials close to the case. The tissue taken was typically skin, bone and tendon, which was then sold for use in procedures such as dental implants and hip replacements. According to authorities, millions of dollars were made by selling the body parts to companies for use in operations done at hospitals and clinics in the United States and Canada.

A New Jersey company, Biomedical Tissue Services, has reportedly been taking body parts from funeral homes across Brooklyn, New York. According to ABC News, they set up rooms like a “surgical suite.” After they took the bones, they replaced them with PVC pipe. This was purportedly done by stealth, without approval of the deceased person or the next of kin. 1,077 bodies were involved, say prosecuters.

Investagators say a former dentist, Michael Mastromarino, is behind the operation. Biomedical was considered one of the “hottest procurement companies in the country,” raking in close to $5 million. Eventually, people became worried: “Can the donors be trusted?” A tissue processing company called LifeCell answered no, and issued a recall on all their tissue.

Cooke’s daughter, Susan Cooke Kittredge, said, “To know his bones were sold was one thing, but to see him standing truncated before me is another entirely.” Now thousands of people around the country are receiving letters warning that they should be tested for infectious diseases like HIV or hepatitis. On February 23, the Brooklyn District Attorney indicted Mastromarino and three others. They are charged with 122 felony counts, including forgery and bodysnatching.

How To Buy A House With Bad Credit And Minimal Down Payment

By Simon Volkov

If you are wondering how to buy a house with bad credit, you’re not alone. Today’s real estate market offers more discounted property choices than ever before. In order to obtain the best price it is helpful to learn about different types of properties and the pros and cons of each.

The Internet is a great source for learning how to buy a house. Buyers can locate information about purchasing newly constructed homes, short sale real estate, bank owned homes, and repossessed properties sold through foreclosure auctions.

Another trustworthy source for obtaining reliable home buying information is real estate agents. Many realty agencies conduct seminars to help buyers determine which type of property is best suited for their needs. One area many realtors have entered into is foreclosure properties. Agents can help buyers locate exceptional deals on repossessed homes, as well as short sale properties.

Short sale homes refer to houses that have entered into foreclosure, but not yet reclaimed by lenders. When banks enter into short sale agreements they let borrowers list their home for sale for less than is owed on the mortgage note. These homes are often sold at 20- to 30-percent below market value to entice a quick sale.

Individuals who want to buy a house, but have poor credit may want to investigate creative finance options that allow them to obtain private financing. Some of the more popular options include lease purchase option agreements and seller carry back mortgages.

Lease options can be a good choice for individuals who cannot afford large down payments. This finance option involves leasing property for 1 to 2 years with a portion of rent payments contributed toward the purchase price.

Buyers provide a small down payment to sellers and enter into a lease contract. Some sellers will lock-in the purchase price when lease option contracts are drafted, while others require buyers to pay fair market value when the contract expires. Both parties must abide by state real estate laws, so it is best to obtain legal counsel to ensure lease purchase agreements are legally binding.

Lease-to-own gives buyers the opportunity to restore their credit while working toward buying the property. Once lease terms expire, buyers obtain a bank loan for the remaining balance. It is crucial for buyers to engage in credit repair strategies to ensure they can obtain financing at the end of the contract. Otherwise, they default on contract terms and could lose all funds vested into the property.

Seller carry back mortgages can also be beneficial for buyers with bad credit. This option requires sellers to act as the mortgage financier. In some cases, sellers offer partial financing and require buyers to obtain a bank loan for the balance.

Buyers typically provide a down payment to secure the property for sale. Loan installments are remitted to the seller. If bank loans are obtained, the lender carries the first mortgage and sellers carry the second mortgage. Seller carry back contracts usually extend for 3 to 5 years. Afterward, buyers obtain bank financing for the balance owed.

Last, but not least, buyers may qualify for financing through Fannie Mae Homepath Mortgage. This government sponsored program provides special financing options to buyers with bad credit, as well as real estate investors and buyers who are looking for discounted properties.

Fannie Mae Homepath properties consist of foreclosure homes that were either repossessed by lenders or returned to banks using deed in lieu of foreclosure. When properties are financed through Homepath Mortgage, buyers are only required to provide a 3-percent down payment and do not have to pay for mortgage insurance or property appraisals.

Another benefit of Fannie Mae properties is many homes qualify for government grants offered through HUDs Neighborhood Stabilization Program. NSP grant funds are offered to buyers who purchase homes in areas with high foreclosure rates. Funds must be used to purchase or rehabilitate properties.

These are just a few ways of how to buy a house with bad credit. Taking time to become educated about various types of properties and financing options can help buyers save thousands of dollars when buying a home.

Man charged with attempted murder in £40 million London jewel heist

Sunday, September 6, 2009

24-year-old Aman Kassaye, of no fixed abode, is to face a charge of attempted murder for his alleged role in an armed robbery that netted £40 million ($65 million) worth of jewelry from a London store.

Kassaye is the seventh man to be charged, and is also facing prosecution for conspiracy to rob the Graff store in New Bond Street, false imprisonment, and using a handgun to resist arrest. He will appear at Wimbledon magistrates court on Monday.

The other six men have already been remanded in custody until October 23, when they will appear at Kingston Crown Court. All are facing charges of conspiracy to rob, and two of them are also charged with a firearms offense.

43 diamond rings, watches, and bracelets were taken from the store. The theft occurred when two armed and suited men walked in and took an employee hostage. It has been reported they used prosthetic masks made from liquid latex but police have not confirmed this. Amateur footage also shows a shot was fired. No-one was injured.

The robbery is one of the biggest the United Kingdom has seen. After the crime a string of getaway vehicles was used, with police believing several more offenders assisted with this stage of the plan. Although The Telegraph claims no stolen property has yet been recovered, this is also unconfirmed by police.

U.S. study of gay sheep may shed light on sexuality

Monday, August 15, 2005

Oregon State University (OSU) animal researchers in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Agriculture‘s (USDA) Dubois, Idaho-based Sheep Experiment Station released a report on an OSU-USDA study which was initiated in 1995 after breeders asked the government to determine why some rams bought as breeding studs showed no interest in females. The researchers are working under a $2.8 million grant from the National Institutes of Health in hopes of developing a test which can determine the likelihood of a ram being female-oriented before it is sold as a stud.

By studying difference in the animal’s brains after slaughter, the study also showed what could be a biological determiner for what makes a ram male-oriented instead of female-oriented sexually. The scientists’ results showed that the anterior preoptic area of the rams’ hypothalamus was 50 percent smaller in male-oriented rams as opposed to female oriented rams. A 1991 study of human brains of AIDS victims showed a similar hypothalamus size difference between gay and heterosexual men.

The sheep researchers postulate that low levels of aromatase hormones in the brain of a developing male sheep fetus may have kept the brain from fully masculinizing, leading to sexually male-oriented rams.

“This lends further support to the idea that homosexuality has biological underpinnings,” Charles Roselli, a professor of physiology and pharmacology, said in an interview with the Corvallis Gazette-Times.

Professor Stormshak believes that “understanding sexual drives and the continuum of sexual behavior could possibly help explain the scientific basis of sexual assault [and] put an end to assertions that homosexuality is a lifestyle choice.”
