US dollar no longer accepted at Taj Mahal and other Indian historical sites

Friday, January 4, 2008

Due to the declining value of the United States dollar, tourism officials in India have decided to no longer accept the American currency at the site of the Taj Mahal and 120 other Indian historical sites.

The monument has refused to take dollars since November, as such, any American tourist wishing to visit the white domed marble mausoleum of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan for his wife Mumtaz Mahal will pay over 500 Indian rupees (US$ 12.80 at the current exchange rate) to be allowed in and additionally receive a free bottle of water.

The decision came as a result as part of the continuing decline of the American dollar, falling 11 percent in 2007 and now valued around 39 rupees.

Tourism Minister Ambika Soni told CNN-IBN that it seemed more practical and will save tourists money because “the dollar was weaker against the rupee,” Soni added “Before the dollar lost its value, there was a demand to have (admission tickets) just in rupees.”

Death toll of Bahrain tourist boat capsizing rises to 57

Saturday, April 1, 2006At least 57 people are now known to have died when a boat designed similar to a traditional dhow capsized one mile of the coast of Bahrain in the Persian Gulf. Seventeen were Indian and a further 13 of the dead are British; people of another six nationalities are also known to have died. The passengers were mostly foreigners from the Nass-Murray and Roberts construction company, and were enjoying an evening dinner cruise in celebration of their completion of part of the Bahrain World Trade Centre towers. Most who died were dining on the lower deck, and were trapped below.

Over 130 people were onboard the boat at the time, although some say the boat was only licensed to carry 120. Others say the limit was 150. Eyewitnesses say the boat was overloaded. The boat capsized in calm seas soon after it left, trapping many below. Helicopters from the US Navy searched for 13 missing persons until Friday morning, when the search was called off. The dhow had been modified to have an extra, higher deck making the vessel less stable. The exact cause is unknown – suggestions from eyewitnesses include the boat suddenly turning left, being hit by a wave, and many of the passengers moving to one side of the boat together. The Bahrain Interior Ministry is to investigate the accident and establish if the boat was seaworthy.

Looted, possibly contaminated body parts transplanted into USA, Canadian patients

Monday, March 20, 2006

Fears of contaminated bone and skin grafts are being felt by unsuspecting patients following the revelation that funeral homes may have been looting corpses.

Janet Evans of Marion Ohio was told by her surgeon, “The bone grafts you got might have been contaminated”. She reacted with shock, “I was flabbergasted because I didn’t even know what he was talking about. I didn’t know I got a bone graft until I got this call. I just thought they put in screws and rods.”

The body of Alistair Cooke, the former host of “Masterpiece Theatre,” was supposedly looted along with more than 1,000 others, according to two law enforcement officials close to the case. The tissue taken was typically skin, bone and tendon, which was then sold for use in procedures such as dental implants and hip replacements. According to authorities, millions of dollars were made by selling the body parts to companies for use in operations done at hospitals and clinics in the United States and Canada.

A New Jersey company, Biomedical Tissue Services, has reportedly been taking body parts from funeral homes across Brooklyn, New York. According to ABC News, they set up rooms like a “surgical suite.” After they took the bones, they replaced them with PVC pipe. This was purportedly done by stealth, without approval of the deceased person or the next of kin. 1,077 bodies were involved, say prosecuters.

Investagators say a former dentist, Michael Mastromarino, is behind the operation. Biomedical was considered one of the “hottest procurement companies in the country,” raking in close to $5 million. Eventually, people became worried: “Can the donors be trusted?” A tissue processing company called LifeCell answered no, and issued a recall on all their tissue.

Cooke’s daughter, Susan Cooke Kittredge, said, “To know his bones were sold was one thing, but to see him standing truncated before me is another entirely.” Now thousands of people around the country are receiving letters warning that they should be tested for infectious diseases like HIV or hepatitis. On February 23, the Brooklyn District Attorney indicted Mastromarino and three others. They are charged with 122 felony counts, including forgery and bodysnatching.

Study links foie gras consumption with Alzheimer’s, arthritis, diabetes, other diseases

Wednesday, June 20, 2007

A study published on June 18 in the American Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences has found a link between the consumption of foie gras and other meat products and a number of diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes mellitus type 2, tuberculosis, and amyloidosis. The link exists in genetically susceptible individuals.

The study was lead by Alan Solomon, M.D., a professor and researcher at the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine and the director of the Human Immunology and Cancer / Alzheimer’s Disease and Amyloid-Related Disorders Research Program. Amyloidoses are a group of disease states caused by the deposition in vital organs of proteins in the form of fibrils, causing a range of symptoms such as swelling and kidney damage. The deposition of amyloid beta in the brain is central in the origin of the disease process of Alzheimer’s disease. Foie gras is made from the livers of ducks or geese that have been force-fed.

According to Solomon, “we posit that this and perhaps other forms of amyloidosis may be transmissible, akin to the infectious nature of prion-related illnesses [such as mad cow disease]. In addition to foie gras, meat derived from sheep and seemingly healthy cattle may represent other dietary sources of [the fibrils]. People with a family history of Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis or other amyloid-associated diseases should avoid consuming foie gras and other foods that may be contaminated with fibrils,” continued Solomon.

5 Easy Ways To Get A Lean Body Fast And Safely

Submitted by: Eric Ho

While you might be following your fitness plan for the best successes possible, it can be extremely difficult for anyone to get to the expectations that they have if they picture themselves as ending up with the body of a model in a short period of time.

But, as long as an individual is willing to put in the hard work and continue to follow best practices, then it could be a lot easier and a lot more manageable than they otherwise thought to get a lean body fast and safely as well.

1. Measure everything

If you don’t get the exact amounts, you must at least as close as you possibly can be. If you are estimating your meals instead of knowing exactly how much you are on, then you could be setting yourself up for failure. Seeing as a pound of fat can be shed by subtracting 3,500 calories from your system, then simply by having 500 calories in errors of rounding a day, then you are adding up a lot of mistakes and won’t hit the results you want.

Have a can of pop that you forgot to record? That could be 150 to 200 calories right there. Have a bagel and also put extra butter on it? What about the handful of pretzels before lunch. And when you were cooking dinner, didn’t you take a little bit extra cheese for yourself? All of these things must be measured exactly if you want perfect results.

2. You should really cook your own meals

It can be easier to cook them all at once, freeze them, then de thaw them for the next day if you’d like. But by ensuring that you have all your own cooking done by you, you will know exactly how much butter, oil, and grease is cooked into the food (or left out of it).

3. Exercise more

A lot of looking lean comes from actually growing your muscles and not just dieting. Sure it’s a combination of the two, but you must actually work out to get your muscles to “pop” and become defined. Furthermore, by working out you are able to burn calories and fat as well as grow, so it’s a great activity to pursue.

4. Cut out extra diets

Diets don’t work in the long run. If you absolutely want to cleanse your system or try to make a minor change, than it’s up to you, but a diet is only a band aid on the overall problem. You should be able to eat for nutritional value. Diets usually mess with that nutritional value and while you might lose weight, it might not be the best way possible.

5. Hang out with people that look like you want to look

It doesn’t mean you need to be a part of the local models club, but chances are if all of your friends lie around on the couch and eat fried wings and potato chips, then you might too. But, if your friends all hit the gym or go into the woods, or play tennis, or whatever, then you might want to tag along just to be part of the gang. The exercise will literally be just another part of hanging out with your friends. The best thing is that this is more of a long term change as well.

Overall, there will always be more ways that you can work harder and get the results that you want. But, as long as you follow these tips then you should see results in a fast period of time. Continue working hard, and you might be able to find your own tips to live by as well as to help others with!
