Mold Remediation In Ct And Asbestos Abatement Can Be Accomplished By Highly Experienced Professionals

byAlma Abell

Mold remediation is particularly important if black mold is present. This is dangerous to the health of the occupants and particularly so if anyone has serious breathing issues. Mold remediation requires very careful examination of the home by a technician from Mold remediation in CT who specializes in mold detection, remediation and mold removal.

Mold remediation in CT requires the specialist to look everywhere black mold can grow. Surprisingly, it can grow on the back of wall paper. Black mold can grow anywhere that is damp for a prolonged period and where there is standing water. Really damp conditions are ideal for black mold growth also.

Once the mold is found, the remediation specialists can begin their work which is essentially encapsulating the mold so the spores do not become airborne. Once the mold is well contained, it can safely be removed from the house. The area where the mold was growing should be treated by chemical recommended by Mold remediation in CT.

Asbestos is a far more serious problem for the homeowner. Federal NESHAP rules mandate that asbestos must be removed in a prescribed method for the building to be compliant. This can only be accomplished by a professional full asbestos removal company. The technicians must be trained and have the specialized knowledge and experience to ensure that you are provided with the following best practices:

* Encapsulation of the Asbestos

* Legal disposal of asbestos

* Site decontamination in compliance with regulations

* Asbestos abatement in demolition projects

* Efficient containment and abatement

The technicians at AA Asbestos Abatement LLC are licensed and certified by Federal and Connecticut regulations. They are fully aware of how to transport asbestos to a disposal site. The asbestos must be wet and sealed in heavy plastic bags for transport to an acceptable landfill. The disposal, storage and transport of asbestos waste at non-worksites is regulated by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA). Local councils can also promulgate regulations if they have the appropriate regulatory authority (ARA). Asbestos is extremely dangerous if it becomes airborne. Many tragic cases of this are now in litigation. If the above procedures are followed, then they are the best protection.

Two British girls arrested for smuggling in Ghana

Thursday, July 12, 2007

Two 16-year-old British girls were arrested in Accra, Ghana earlier this month for apparently attempting to smuggle £300,000 worth of cocaine in laptop bags.

Yasemin Vatansever, of Cypriot descent and Yatunde Diya of Nigerian descent were arrested as they attempted to board a British Airways flight from the Kotoka International Airport on July 2, 2007. The arrest was by the Ghanaian Narcotic Control Board. They were alleged to be carrying 6.5 kg of drugs. They are currently in Ghana police custody and have been visited by British High Commission staff.

The girls who are both students from Islington, north London, had left home after informing their families they were making a school trip to France. They are expected to be charged with “possessing narcotic drugs and attempting to export drugs”, for which they could be jailed for up to ten years if found guilty.

The arrest is part of the Operation Westbridge project set up in November 2006 as a collaboration between the Ghanaian Narcotic Control Board and HM Revenue and Customs of the UK. It is to curb the influx of drugs into Europe and the UK through West Africa which is now being used as a transit point from South America. The project involves the provision of technical and operational expertise to the Ghanaian teams and training in the use of specialist scanning equipment. Ghana is the first country in Africa to introduce such equipment.

Wikinews interviews U.S. Libertarian presidential candidate Wayne Allyn Root

Wednesday, February 6, 2008

Wikinews held an exclusive interview with Wayne Allyn Root, one of the candidates for the Libertarian Party nomination for the 2008 U.S. presidential election.

Root is the founder and chairman of Winning Edge International Inc., a sports handicapping company based in Las Vegas, Nevada. In addition, he is an author and a television producer, as well as an on-screen personality both as host and guest on several talk shows.

Root, a long-time Republican, declared his candidacy for the Libertarian Party on May 4, 2007.

He says he is concerned about the qualities of many who run for president, and fears that they do not know the needs of American citizens. He also says that they cater to big businesses instead of small ones.

He has goals of limiting the federal government and believes that the US went into Iraq for wrong reasons. A strong supporter of the War on Terror, he feels that it was mishandled. He has conservative values and came from a blue collar family in New York. He graduated from Columbia University with fellow presidential hopeful Barack Obama in 1983.

Root believes that America is in trouble and hopes to change that if elected.

People protest in Berlin against German Court overturning five-year rent cap

Saturday, April 17, 2021

On Thursday, Germany’s Federal Constitutional Court ruled a five-year rent freeze introduced earlier in February last year illegal due to lack of the Berlin Senate’s jurisdiction. This decision allowed rent to be increased as the Court ruling invalidated the previously introduced law which had capped the rent for about 90% of renters in the country. Protesters gathered in the capital city of Berlin with demonstrations against the ruling and against the possible increases in rent. Some demanded dispossessions of large real estate companies.

Protesters gathered in Berlin’s Neukölln and Kreuzberg districts, and reportedly thousands of people participated. The crowd reportedly walked from Hermannplatz towards Kottbusser Tor and then to Oranienplatz. Police closed several streets for the day. Organizers said 25 thousand people reportedly joined the protest, The Berlin Spectator reported.

Protesters marched with posters such as “You can have our hatred, You do not get our rent. (Housing is not a commodity.)” ((de))German language: ?unseren hass den konnt ihr haben, unsere miete bekomm ihr nicht (wohnenist keine ware) and “The rich should pay! (Social struggles connects [us].)” ((de))German language: ?die reichen sollen zahlen (soziale kämpfe verbinden). Some protesters brought lids of boiling of frying pans and made noise. The German word for lid is same as the one for rent cap. They reportedly chanted slogan “If you take a cover from us, we’ll come back with thousands.”.

The Social Democratic Greens and Left parties’ coalition previously introduced the rent cap through the country’s Senate in February last year, citing raising rent prices in the country. Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union alliance and the Free Democratic party had filed the appeal leading to the present ruling.

The overturned ruling by Berlin State Government had previously fixed the rent from February 2020 to February 2025 on its June 2019 level. A senator who was in charge of urban development, Sebastian Scheel, commented about his disappointment, and said either the federal government or any of the states now had an opportunity to create laws to control the rent.

10 Of The Best Summer Produce To Eat

Submitted by: Sarah Labdar

Summer is a time for sun in the fun, picnics, and days at the beach, barbecues and lots of fresh produce like strawberries, watermelon, corn on the cob, tomatoes, etc. Summer is the best time to head to the farmers market; roadside fruit stands, and produce markets. Locally grown produce is sold cheap due to the abundance of fruits and vegetables available this time of year. This makes summer the best time of year to buy plenty of fruits and vegetables. Load up on the multicolor cornucopia of nutrients that this summer s produce provides.

Corn

You know its summer when you see the corn stocks sprouting up in the once wide-open cornfields. Corn on the cob is a summer staple at cookouts and barbecues and for good reason. Corn contains a unique combination of phytonutrients, which provides the body with antioxidant benefits. With all the nutrients corn contains such as B-complex vitamins B1, B5 and folic acid, as well as antioxidants vitamin C and manganese, its phytonutrients are the most beneficial to the body in the summer. Corn contains antioxidant phytonutrients including anthocyanins, beta-carotene, caffeic acid, coumaric acid, ferulic acid, lutein, syringic acid, vanillic acid, protocatechuic acid, and zeaxanthin. These powerful antioxidants help protect the body from the suns damaging rays and lower the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration. Unless you live in Antarctica it s hard to stay out of the sun during the summer months, which means lots of exposure to UV rays. So eat a lot of corn this summer to protect your body from the damaging effects of the sun.

Zucchini

Part of the summer squash family, zucchini is a powerful summer vegetable low in calories, but high in fiber and nutrients. Its fiber content aids in digestion, prevents constipation, maintains blood sugar levels and helps with weight management by discouraging overeating. Zucchini s nutrients include but are not limited to vitamins A, B6, B5, C, folate, minerals copper, magnesium, potassium, manganese, phosphorus and antioxidants lutein, and beta-carotene. The antioxidants within zucchini, which include vitamin C and A, fight against free radicals, which can lead to cardiovascular disease and cancer and have anti inflammatory effects on the body. The minerals found in zucchini provide several health benefits. Copper helps to reduce the development of hyper inflammatory disorders such as asthma, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Magnesium reduces the risk for heart attacks and stroke and along with phosphorus builds and maintains healthy bones. Potassium helps to lower blood pressure. Zucchini along with its close relatives in the squash family are versatile, healthy summer vegetables.

Eggplant

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0gb9v4LI4o[/youtube]

Eggplant is officially the most well known purple vegetable out there. Its purple color comes from its phytonutrient compounds, which have antioxidant properties. The phytonutrient compounds found in eggplant include phenolic compounds caffeic and chlorogenic acid and flavonoids anthocyanin and nasunin. These potent antioxidants protect the body by eliminating free radicals and protecting cell membranes from damage. Chlorogenic acid found in eggplants happens to be one of the most potent antioxidants with additional beneficial characteristics. It is an anti mutagenic (anti cancer), anti microbial, anti LDL (bad cholesterol), and antiviral. Nasunin, which is found in eggplants skin, is an iron chelator in addition to being a powerful antioxidant. Don t knock it until you try it, this funny shaped purple vegetable has tons of health perks.

Tomatoes

Although tomatoes are available year round, they are the freshest during the summer. Big, red, plump tomatoes are great protectors of your skin, heart and health. Tomatoes contain an antioxidant carotenoid called lycopene, which not only helps give them their color but is responsible for several health benefits. Lycopene protects cells from free radical damage. It acts like a natural sun block reducing the damaged caused by UV rays. Its vitamin C content helps to protect against infections, oncoming colds, and viruses. Add tomatoes to your summer meals to avoid getting sunburn.

Rhuba

Rhubarb only grows in the summer and is thought of as a vegetable but is actually a fruit. Most rightly so because its most often used in desserts. Rhubarb looks like red celery, but it gets its red color from the powerful antioxidants, which promote health and prevent disease. Antioxidants, which give the appearance of a red color, are lycopene and anthocyanins. Both of these antioxidants promote the health of the heart, eyes, skin, immune system and prevent cancer. Another antioxidant rhubarb contains is lutein. Lutein neutralizes free radicals and protects the eyes and skin specifically. In addition rhubarb is loaded with vitamins and minerals. Rhubarb has sufficient amounts of vitamin K, helping the body to form blood clots during times of injury. Rhubarb is loaded with healthy minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese, selenium, copper, and phosphorus, which helps with bone health, red blood cell function, and nervous system health. Rhubarb is a non-dairy source of bone building calcium. Although most people prefer to indulge in rhubarb in its dessert form, avoid the extra calories by eating it raw.

Strawberries

Picking strawberries right off the vine is a perfect summer activity where you can buy strawberries in bulk for cheap. Strawberries are known for their bright red color, plump shape and sweet flavor. Strawberries are full of healthy nutrients with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. Strawberries are most notably known for their vitamin C content but are also good sources of vitamin A, K, folate, choline, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, fluoride and manganese. With all its healthy nutrients strawberries health benefits range from prevention of cardiovascular disease, decreased risk of Type 2 Diabetes and cancer prevention. That s why strawberries are the best fruit to eat to load up on antioxidant benefits.

Cherries

Cherries are known as a super fruit, which come into season during the summer. They re loaded with vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants, which provide the body with a wide variety of health benefits. Most notably cherries antioxidants, anthocyanins and melatonin act as an anti inflammatory, which reduces gout and joint pain associated with arthritis, in addition it regulates heart rhythms and in the bodies sleep cycle. Its vitamin and mineral content (beta carotene, vitamin C, E, potassium, magnesium, iron, folate) make it a good food to aid in brain function and prevent memory loss. Cherries are full of fiber, which aids digestion but also helps in weight management by revving up the fat burning process and decrease fat storage. Cherries reduce the risk for diabetes, heart disease and cancer. So grab a bowl of cherries as your next snack and dig in.

Watermelon

Summer barbecues and cookouts call for a fresh, juicy delicious dessert, watermelon. Remember eating all the way down to the rind or seeing who can pit the seeds the farthest. Watermelon can be a refreshing treat to cool the body on a hot summer day. Its water content alone can keep you hydrated, boost your mood, sharpen your memory and provide you with energy. In addition watermelon contains powerful antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and amino acids. It detoxes the body, eliminates liver toxins, stimulates the kidneys, reduces acne, removes cellulite and moisturizes the skin. Antioxidants vitamin A, C, carotenoids and lycopene neutralize free radicals, which protect the skin and eyes and prevent cancer. Watermelon contains the amino acid citruline, which helps to create the amino acid arginine within the body. These amino acids remove ammonia from the body and produce nitric oxide. This relaxes blood vessels, lowers blood pressure, improves circulation, the immune system and heart activity. The white part of the rind also contains silica, which strengthens bones and helps with proper functioning of the pancreas. Eating watermelon will fill up your stomach and satisfy your sweet craving.

Blueberries

The best way tot eat blueberries is by picking them right off the branch. Blueberry picking is a fun summer activity, which supplies the body with a ton of health benefits. Blueberries aren t called super fruits for nothing. Blueberries have the capability to boost the immune system, prevent infections, neutralize free radicals, reduce belly fat, preserve vision, increase brain health, reduce the risk of heart disease and caner and improve digestion and constipation and so much more. Blueberries have the highest antioxidant capacity of all other fresh fruits in the world. Blueberries contain anthocyanins, vitamin C, E, A, B complex, copper, selenium, zinc, iron, carotenoids, flavonoids, phosphorus, magnesium, manganese, and fiber. Anthocyanins have the highest concentration and are responsible for their blue/purple color. All of blueberries nutrients work in combination to improve the bodies health overall. Head to the blueberry patch and pop some blueberries in your mouth to improve your mood, and sharpen your memory.

Raspberries

The sweet and tart taste of raspberries in the summer can be just what you need. Raspberries like many other berries (blueberries, blackberries, strawberries) are in season during the summer. And much like these other berries, raspberries are filled with potent phytonutrient antioxidants, which protect the body form harmful free radicals and prevent cellular damage. Raspberries have higher antioxidant capacities than strawberries, kiwis and tomatoes. The primary phytonutrient tannin in raspberries is ellagic acid. It is only found in a few other foods such as green tea. Raspberries also contain flavonoids quercetin, kaempferol and anthocyanins, which are responsible for its luscious red color. These antioxidants have antimicrobial properties, which prevent the overgrowth of certain bacteria and fungi, and anticancer activity, which prevent the growth of tumors and the damage of cell membranes. Raspberries are full of fiber, which help to control cholesterol, manage weight and promote weight loss. But raspberries only grow for a short window of time so its vital to get them while their ripe.

Glasgow cannabis enthusiasts celebrate ‘green’ on city green

Tuesday, April 22, 2014

Coinciding with Easter Sunday, Glasgow Cannabis Social Club’s annual 420 event was held on Glasgow Green, under sunny blue skies, and overlooking the river Clyde. Despite the city’s council attempting to revoke permission for the gathering at the last minute, police were happy for it to go-ahead with approximately a dozen officers attending in high-visibility vests.

The Daily Record reported five arrests were made for minor offences, likely smoking and possession of small quantities of cannabis. Taking a less-sensational — and more accurate — line of reporting, the Monday edition of Glasgow’s Evening News stated five were referred to the Procurator Fiscal who is responsible for deciding if charges should be brought.

Official figures provided by the police were that 150 attended. With people coming and going, Wikinews reporters estimated upwards of 200 attended, compared to nearly 700 who had signed up for the event on Facebook. Hemp goods were advertised and on sale at the event, and some attendees were seen drinking cannabis-themed energy drinks.

“I was searched and charged under the Misuse of Drugs Act (which is a lot of bollocks)” one attendee noted online, adding “not fair to happen on a brilliant day like it was, other than that I had a great day!” A second said they were openly smoking and ignored by police, who “were only really focusing on people who looked particularly young”.

Cannabis seeds were openly and legally sold at the event and a hydroponics supplier brought a motortrike towing an advertising trailer. Actually growing cannabis is, however, illegal in the UK.

With the event openly advocating the legalisation of cannabis, speakers put their arguments for this to a receptive crowd. Retired police officer James Duffy, of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, spoke of the failed United States alcohol prohibition policy; stressing such policies needlessly bring people into contact with criminal elements. Highlighting other countries where legalisation has been implemented, he pointed out such led to lower crime, and lower drug use overall.

One speaker, who produced a bottle of cannabis oil he had received through the post, asserted this cured his prostate cancer. Others highlighted the current use of Sativex by the National Health Service, with a cost in-excess of £150 for a single bottle of GW Pharmaceuticals patented spray — as-compared to the oil shown to the crowd, with a manufacturing cost of approximately £10.

Similar ‘420’ pro-cannabis events were held globally.

Bat for Lashes plays the Bowery Ballroom: an Interview with Natasha Khan

Friday, September 28, 2007

Bat for Lashes is the doppelgänger band ego of one of the leading millennial lights in British music, Natasha Khan. Caroline Weeks, Abi Fry and Lizzy Carey comprise the aurora borealis that backs this haunting, shimmering zither and glockenspiel peacock, and the only complaint coming from the audience at the Bowery Ballroom last Tuesday was that they could not camp out all night underneath these celestial bodies.

We live in the age of the lazy tendency to categorize the work of one artist against another, and Khan has had endless exultations as the next Björk and Kate Bush; Sixousie Sioux, Stevie Nicks, Sinead O’Connor, the list goes on until it is almost meaningless as comparison does little justice to the sound and vision of the band. “I think Bat For Lashes are beyond a trend or fashion band,” said Jefferson Hack, publisher of Dazed & Confused magazine. “[Khan] has an ancient power…she is in part shamanic.” She describes her aesthetic as “powerful women with a cosmic edge” as seen in Jane Birkin, Nico and Cleopatra. And these women are being heard. “I love the harpsichord and the sexual ghost voices and bowed saws,” said Radiohead‘s Thom Yorke of the track Horse and I. “This song seems to come from the world of Grimm’s fairytales.”

Bat’s debut album, Fur And Gold, was nominated for the 2007 Mercury Prize, and they were seen as the dark horse favorite until it was announced Klaxons had won. Even Ladbrokes, the largest gambling company in the United Kingdom, had put their money on Bat for Lashes. “It was a surprise that Klaxons won,” said Khan, “but I think everyone up for the award is brilliant and would have deserved to win.”

Natasha recently spoke with David Shankbone about art, transvestism and drug use in the music business.

DS: Do you have any favorite books?

NK: [Laughs] I’m not the best about finishing books. What I usually do is I will get into a book for a period of time, and then I will dip into it and get the inspiration and transformation in my mind that I need, and then put it away and come back to it. But I have a select rotation of cool books, like Women Who Run With the Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estés and Little Birds by Anaïs Nin. Recently, Catching the Big Fish by David Lynch.

DS: Lynch just came out with a movie last year called Inland Empire. I interviewed John Vanderslice last night at the Bowery Ballroom and he raved about it!

NK: I haven’t seen it yet!

DS: Do you notice a difference between playing in front of British and American audiences?

NK: The U.S. audiences are much more full of expression and noises and jubilation. They are like, “Welcome to New York, Baby!” “You’re Awesome!” and stuff like that. Whereas in England they tend to be a lot more reserved. Well, the English are, but it is such a diverse culture you will get the Spanish and Italian gay guys at the front who are going crazy. I definitely think in America they are much more open and there is more excitement, which is really cool.

DS: How many instruments do you play and, please, include the glockenspiel in that number.

NK: [Laughs] I think the number is limitless, hopefully. I try my hand at anything I can contribute; I only just picked up the bass, really—

DS: –I have a great photo of you playing the bass.

NK: I don’t think I’m very good…

DS: You look cool with it!

NK: [Laughs] Fine. The glockenspiel…piano, mainly, and also the harp. Guitar, I like playing percussion and drumming. I usually speak with all my drummers so that I write my songs with them in mind, and we’ll have bass sounds, choir sounds, and then you can multi-task with all these orchestral sounds. Through the magic medium of technology I can play all kinds of sounds, double bass and stuff.

DS: Do you design your own clothes?

NK: All four of us girls love vintage shopping and charity shops. We don’t have a stylist who tells us what to wear, it’s all very much our own natural styles coming through. And for me, personally, I like to wear jewelery. On the night of the New York show that top I was wearing was made especially for me as a gift by these New York designers called Pepper + Pistol. And there’s also my boyfriend, who is an amazing musician—

DS: —that’s Will Lemon from Moon and Moon, right? There is such good buzz about them here in New York.

NK: Yes! They have an album coming out in February and it will fucking blow your mind! I think you would love it, it’s an incredible masterpiece. It’s really exciting, I’m hoping we can do a crazy double unfolding caravan show, the Bat for Lashes album and the new Moon and Moon album: that would be really theatrical and amazing! Will prints a lot of my T-shirts because he does amazing tapestries and silkscreen printing on clothes. When we play there’s a velvety kind of tapestry on the keyboard table that he made. So I wear a lot of his things, thrift store stuff, old bits of jewelry and antique pieces.

DS: You are often compared to Björk and Kate Bush; do those constant comparisons tend to bother you as an artist who is trying to define herself on her own terms?

NK: No, I mean, I guess that in the past it bothered me, but now I just feel really confident and sure that as time goes on my musical style and my writing is taking a pace of its own, and I think in time the music will speak for itself and people will see that I’m obviously doing something different. Those women are fantastic, strong, risk-taking artists—

DS: —as are you—

NK: —thank you, and that’s a great tradition to be part of, and when I look at artists like Björk and Kate Bush, I think of them as being like older sisters that have come before; they are kind of like an amazing support network that comes with me.

DS: I’d imagine it’s preferable to be considered the next Björk or Kate Bush instead of the next Britney.

NK: [Laughs] Totally! Exactly! I mean, could you imagine—oh, no I’m not going to try to offend anyone now! [Laughs] Let’s leave it there.

DS: Does music feed your artwork, or does you artwork feed your music more? Or is the relationship completely symbiotic?

NK: I think it’s pretty back-and-forth. I think when I have blocks in either of those area, I tend to emphasize the other. If I’m finding it really difficult to write something I know that I need to go investigate it in a more visual way, and I’ll start to gather images and take photographs and make notes and make collages and start looking to photographers and filmmakers to give me a more grounded sense of the place that I’m writing about, whether it’s in my imagination or in the characters. Whenever I’m writing music it’s a very visual place in my mind. It has a location full of characters and colors and landscapes, so those two things really compliment each other, and they help the other one to blossom and support the other. They are like brother and sister.

DS: When you are composing music, do you see notes and words as colors and images in your mind, and then you put those down on paper?

NK: Yes. When I’m writing songs, especially lately because I think the next album has a fairly strong concept behind it and I’m writing the songs, really imagining them, so I’m very immersed into the concept of the album and the story that is there through the album. It’s the same as when I’m playing live, I will imagine I see a forest of pine trees and sky all around me and the audience, and it really helps me. Or I’ll just imagine midnight blue and emerald green, those kind of Eighties colors, and they help me.

DS: Is it always pine trees that you see?

NK: Yes, pine trees and sky, I guess.

DS: What things in nature inspire you?

NK: I feel drained thematically if I’m in the city too long. I think that when I’m in nature—for example, I went to Big Sur last year on a road trip and just looking up and seeing dark shadows of trees and starry skies really gets me and makes me feel happy. I would sit right by the sea, and any time I have been a bit stuck I will go for a long walk along the ocean and it’s just really good to see vast horizons, I think, and epic, huge, all-encompassing visions of nature really humble you and give you a good sense of perspective and the fact that you are just a small particle of energy that is vibrating along with everything else. That really helps.

DS: Are there man-made things that inspire you?

NK: Things that are more cultural, like open air cinemas, old Peruvian flats and the Chelsea Hotel. Funny old drag queen karaoke bars…

DS: I photographed some of the famous drag queens here in New York. They are just such great creatures to photograph; they will do just about anything for the camera. I photographed a famous drag queen named Miss Understood who is the emcee at a drag queen restaurant here named Lucky Cheng’s. We were out in front of Lucky Cheng’s taking photographs and a bus was coming down First Avenue, and I said, “Go out and stop that bus!” and she did! It’s an amazing shot.

NK: Oh. My. God.

DS: If you go on her Wikipedia article it’s there.

NK: That’s so cool. I’m really getting into that whole psychedelic sixties and seventies Paris Is Burning and Jack Smith and the Destruction of Atlantis. Things like The Cockettes. There seems to be a bit of a revolution coming through that kind of psychedelic drag queen theater.

DS: There are just so few areas left where there is natural edge and art that is not contrived. It’s taking a contrived thing like changing your gender, but in the backdrop of how that is still so socially unacceptable.

NK: Yeah, the theatrics and creativity that go into that really get me. I’m thinking about The Fisher King…do you know that drag queen in The Fisher King? There’s this really bad and amazing drag queen guy in it who is so vulnerable and sensitive. He sings these amazing songs but he has this really terrible drug problem, I think, or maybe it’s a drink problem. It’s so bordering on the line between fabulous and those people you see who are so in love with the idea of beauty and elevation and the glitz and the glamor of love and beauty, but then there’s this really dark, tragic side. It’s presented together in this confusing and bewildering way, and it always just gets to me. I find it really intriguing.

DS: How are you received in the Pakistani community?

NK: [Laughs] I have absolutely no idea! You should probably ask another question, because I have no idea. I don’t have contact with that side of my family anymore.

DS: When you see artists like Pete Doherty or Amy Winehouse out on these suicidal binges of drug use, what do you think as a musician? What do you get from what you see them go through in their personal lives and with their music?

NK: It’s difficult. The drugs thing was never important to me, it was the music and expression and the way he delivered his music, and I think there’s a strange kind of romantic delusion in the media, and the music media especially, where they are obsessed with people who have terrible drug problems. I think that’s always been the way, though, since Billie Holiday. The thing that I’m questioning now is that it seems now the celebrity angle means that the lifestyle takes over from the actual music. In the past people who had musical genius, unfortunately their personal lives came into play, but maybe that added a level of romance, which I think is pretty uncool, but, whatever. I think that as long as the lifestyle doesn’t precede the talent and the music, that’s okay, but it always feels uncomfortable for me when people’s music goes really far and if you took away the hysteria and propaganda of it, would the music still stand up? That’s my question. Just for me, I’m just glad I don’t do heavy drugs and I don’t have that kind of problem, thank God. I feel that’s a responsibility you have, to present that there’s a power in integrity and strength and in the lifestyle that comes from self-love and assuredness and positivity. I think there’s a real big place for that, but it doesn’t really get as much of that “Rock n’ Roll” play or whatever.

DS: Is it difficult to come to the United States to play considering all the wars we start?

NK: As an English person I feel equally as responsible for that kind of shit. I think it is a collective consciousness that allows violence and those kinds of things to continue, and I think that our governments should be ashamed of themselves. But at the same time, it’s a responsibility of all of our countries, no matter where you are in the world to promote a peaceful lifestyle and not to consciously allow these conflicts to continue. At the same time, I find it difficult to judge because I think that the world is full of shades of light and dark, from spectrums of pure light and pure darkness, and that’s the way human nature and nature itself has always been. It’s difficult, but it’s just a process, and it’s the big creature that’s the world; humankind is a big creature that is learning all the time. And we have to go through these processes of learning to see what is right.

Edmund White on writing, incest, life and Larry Kramer

Thursday, November 8, 2007

What you are about to read is an American life as lived by renowned author Edmund White. His life has been a crossroads, the fulcrum of high-brow Classicism and low-brow Brett Easton Ellisism. It is not for the faint. He has been the toast of the literary elite in New York, London and Paris, befriending artistic luminaries such as Salman Rushdie and Sir Ian McKellen while writing about a family where he was jealous his sister was having sex with his father as he fought off his mother’s amorous pursuit.

The fact is, Edmund White exists. His life exists. To the casual reader, they may find it disquieting that someone like his father existed in 1950’s America and that White’s work is the progeny of his intimate effort to understand his own experience.

Wikinews reporter David Shankbone understood that an interview with Edmund White, who is professor of creative writing at Princeton University, who wrote the seminal biography of Jean Genet, and who no longer can keep track of how many sex partners he has encountered, meant nothing would be off limits. Nothing was. Late in the interview they were joined by his partner Michael Caroll, who discussed White’s enduring feud with influential writer and activist Larry Kramer.
