Romanian tourism to be rebranded

Friday, May 6, 2005

Romania’s National Authority for Tourism (ANT) announced that they would promote tourism in Romania through a new branding strategy, in collaboration with the United States Agency for International Development. The director of ANT, Marius Critonescu, said that the branding exercise will be “a significant component of the Romania’s development as a new tourist destination of international level.” He also added that the development of an integrated brand for Romanian tourism will promote a more positive image for the country, thereby increasing the number of tourists and investors. In recent times, there has been quite a lot of investment in “national branding”, especially in the field of tourism, as most marketing experts believe that branding for a product or a country is theoretically the same thing, and that the same strategies and approach should be used for both.

Concerning the Romanian tourism rebranding, international tourism and marketing expert James MacGregor stated that, “We have to touch the hearts and souls of the contemporary tourists who no longer travel for a simple beach or ski track. They want to live a self-knowledge experience that is truly uplifting and will leave unforgettable memories. The brand must show them not what they will see or do as tourists but what they will feel when visiting Romania.”

Smoking: Good For Your Business’ Health

Submitted by: Iain Mackintosh

So, whether you love or hate the UK s smoking ban, it seems to have stuck, and the majority of the country seems to be in favour. Sorry smokers, but the smoking ban isn t going away anytime soon. But the cloud of thick smoke hanging above office entrances around the country does have a faint silver lining to it it opens the door for some excellent social opportunities! The exile of smokers has led to a sense of solidarity and joint state of exclusion that is the perfect breeding ground for friendship and business networking!

If you are based in a large office block like ours, the chances are you will not have met the majority of your neighbors. If you can t meet them, then it s impossible to get your foot in the door and make business allies. Fortunately, there seems to be at least one smoker in every office in the country, and as the hourly cigarette ritual occurs, the chances of meeting others is far greater now they are all forced outside. The smoking chats are ideal business networking opportunities.

Assuming you do manage to meet someone who should be interested in using your services huddled in the cold smoking chat outside your office, what should you do to ensure you grab their attention? Here are 5 top tips to business networking which should supplement their nicotine craving with a desire to become your customers:

1) Find a natural opening

This is the beauty of the UK smoking ban. If you are both outside puffing on a cigarette then you have at least one thing in common thus sidestepping the most awkward part of business networking at conferences. Combine this with the fact you both most likely work in the same building and you re away with a natural opening!

2) Have your business introduction primed and waiting

If you get the smoking chat going, it s only a matter of time before your job and company come into discussion. So what do you do? is something of a staple inquiry in the small talk arena and it s a golden opportunity for you. Be succinct and interesting the more long winded you are, the longer delay before your next nicotine fix! If you get a tell me more or some follow up questions, you know you ve succeeded and the business networking can begin in earnest.

3) Be enthusiastic and positive about your business

Sure, nobody is thrilled to be talking about their job all the time, but your (long-term) aim here is to sell. If you don t sound interested, positive and confident about what you do, then there s no reason for them to follow up with questions and ultimately business inquiries. This should all be part of your business networking preparation to make the talk engaging, however when you do deliver your spiel, be sure to speak clearly and sound as keen as it s natural to do so, without being off-putting!

4) Listen carefully

You know those gaps in your smoking chat where the other person is talking? Make sure you listen carefully and aren t thinking about what to say next or anxiously reading the side-of-packet health warning! This is foremost a relationship, and you can t maintain one effectively if you aren t listening to them properly. Also, they may mention something which you can bring up again later, either to prove you were listening or to link your business to theirs. Ignore this one at your peril.

5) Remember to follow up

This is crucial. If you make a contact who wants to hear more about your business, don t let the opportunity slip away. If you promise to send over more details about your products and services, be sure to do it as soon as you return from your smoking chat. If you say you ll drop by their office to discuss things further, make sure you get around to it, otherwise your future smoking chats will be awkward and you will have lost a valuable business associate. They say smoking kills, but not following up your smoking chat will kill your new friend s interest far quicker!

Not every smoker you meet will make an ideal business networking partner of course, but the time spent pandering to your addiction is far more valuable if you manage to get extra custom for your business in the process. Hey, the extra business you drum up may mean it s actually more costly to give up your smoking habit!

Lawsuits filed against students accused of illegally sharing files over the Internet2

Thursday, April 14, 2005

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has filed 405 lawsuits against students at 18 colleges across the US. The RIAA says these students were illegally sharing songs and films over the Internet2. They claim that 3,900 songs were available on the network. The RIAA said that each person sued downloaded an average of 2,300 songs.

The MPAA has also filed several lawsuits, against students, but has declined to comment on the number of students sued. The MPAA claim that users of the Internet2 had swapped 99 terabytes of films per day. This is more then 15,000 full length films.

The Internet2 is a high speed network used by 207 US universities. It was designed to provide a high speed alternative for researchers and other educators to share information. The Internet2 allows for very high speed connections — a film can be downloaded in as little as 30 seconds, compared with approximately six hours over other high-speed connections, such as DSL.

Cary Sherman the president of the Recording Industry Association of America is quoted as saying that “Internet2 is increasingly becoming the network of choice for students looking to steal songs and other copyrighted works on a massive scale”.

Some have raised the issue of how the RIAA and MPAA gained access to the network, as it is a closed network environment for universities only. The Internet2 does not know how they gained access as they have not given them access or handed over any data. The RIAA will not say how it did the monitoring, but claims it was entirely legal.

A spokesperson for the Internet2 told the Los Angeles Times that copyright infringement is prohibited under its rules, though its chief executive, Doug Van Houweling, in a separate interview admitted that he is aware that there is a lot of file-sharing going on. He also stated that it is possible to filter traffic so as to block illegal activity; however, it would slow the network’s performance and they will not be doing it.

European Court of Justice rules ISPs not obliged to reveal identity of people suspected of illegal sharing

Friday, July 20, 2007

It is compatible with the EU legislation that Member States exclude the personal data communication related to the internet traffic when this is requested in order to allow the prosecution of violations of the royalties in civil cases.

According the European Court of Justice (ECJ), the supreme court of European Union, the EU laws do not oblige ISPs to hand over personal data of people suspected of illegal sharing of copyrighted materials over the net.

The ECJ has been asked for a preliminary ruling on question “Does Community law…permit Member States to limit the duty of operators of electronic communications networks and services, providers of telecommunications network access and providers of data storage services to retain and make available connection and traffic information generated during the supply of an information society service to where it is required in connection with a criminal investigation or the need to protect public safety and national defence, thus excluding civil proceedings?” And its opinion, presented by advocate general Juliane Kokott, is that member states are allowed to ‘exclude’ revealing personal data on internet traffic in civil cases. This does not apply to criminal cases, where such compliance would be required.

A Carrier Heat Pump Offers Several Benefits For Your Home

byAlma Abell

An increasing number of people are switching to electric vehicles because they aren’t as fossil fuel-dependent as traditional cars are. The same trend is happening in the HVAC industry, with more homeowners and business owners opting for heat pumps. A Carrier Heat Pump is particularly known for its high quality and ability to save you on your utility bill each month.

Benefits

The Carrier Heat Pump provides cost savings because the more you use the pump, which runs on electricity, the less you have to use your home’s gas furnace. You can choose from a wide variety of pumps. For instance, a packaged heat pump essentially packs all of the advantages of an efficient cooling unit, heating unit and strong fan coil into one unit. A ductless one is ideal for those whose homes don’t have existing ductwork or those who need to cool and seasonally heat a room added to the home.

Other Options

You percent government tax credit; the tax credit helps you to recoup a portion of your pump installment costs.

How It Works

Heat pumps produce cool air in the summer or even year-round in warmer climates, and they effectively reverse their operation during cooler seasons to provide warm air for your house. A Carrier Heat Pump not only heats and cools your home but also dehumidifies—yet another perk of this highly rated product. The right company will show you how your system works and answer any questions you may have. With a quality heating and cooling system, you can be confident that your entire family will remain comfortable in every season in the years ahead.

Canadian inspectors to test food ingredients from China

Saturday, April 28, 2007

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued border alerts for specific protein ingredients, imported from China, that may be incorporated into products destined for human consumption.

Inspectors from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) will hold products, such as wheat and corn gluten, as well as soy and rice proteins until they can be tested for melamine, the contaminant found to have sickened pets through its use in pet food. If determined to be free of melamine, the ingredients will be released to the intended recipient. Materials such as glutens and protein powders are used commonly in many forms of food products.

The CFIA said it was not acting on specific information, but rather taking a cautious approach to human protection. “That’s why we have the border lookout for the ingredient, so that we can proactively assess any potential that the product is contaminated,” Paul Mayers of the CFIA told CBC News.

Since the border alert for melamine is a new procedure, the government can’t be sure if the contaminant made it into the food chain previously. The CFIA acknowledged that the same Chinese company under suspicion in the tainted pet food affair had shipped wheat gluten to a Canadian company, which in turn used it in food for fish farms. Although the fish were subsequently eaten by people, the CFIA believes the health risk from such consumption would be low.

In related news, Canadian researchers at the University of Guelph believe they may have determined the mechanism of how melamine caused illness in cats and dogs.

Both cyanuric acid and melamine were found in urine samples from pets that died after consuming contaminated pet food. The two compounds react with one another to form crystals that may block kidney function, researchers at the university said. The researchers observed crystals formed in cat urine by the addition of melamine and cyanuric acid. The composition of these crystals matches those found in the urine of affected pets when compared by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).

“You wouldn’t normally expect to find those compounds in pet food, and hence nobody was really looking for it,” said John Melichercik, director of analytical laboratory services. “It’s just another piece of the puzzle along the way in this particular pet-food issue.”

Historic gym the site of Benet Academy, Illinois victory over Oswego

Monday, January 18, 2010

Benet Academy Redwings 40 34 Oswego Panthers

The Benet Academy Redwings boys basketball team defeated the Oswego High School Panthers 40–34 Saturday night at Benet’s historic Alumni Gym.

Located at Lisle, Illinois, United States, the gymnasium is home to Benet’s winning streak of 102 consecutive home games. The statewide record lasted from November 26, 1975 until January 24, 1987, when Naperville North High School defeated the Redwings 47–46. Benet also achieved 96 consecutive victories in the Western Suburban Catholic Conference at that time.

The school continued to use the facility, colloquially referred to as the “Old Gym” or the “Small Gym”, until the end of the 1994 season, when a newer athletic center was built on campus. It wasn’t until the late 1990’s when then-coach Marty Gaughan decided to play one game per year in the Alumni Gym to remind the school of its history. “There is just an electricity, and you feel it when you are in there,” said Gaughan, who coached the team from the 1989–1990 season to the 2007–2008 season.

This tradition continued until the 2006–2007 season, when the Redwings played against long-time rival St. Francis High School. Renovations prevented the gym from being used for athletic events over the past two seasons. This game was Benet coach Gene Heidkamp’s first opportunity to coach in the older gym. “So much history and winning has taken place there, which makes it so special. It is something the entire school community is excited about,” said Heidkamp.

Saturday’s game was played at the Alumni Gym at the request of Oswego assistant coach Jim Bagley. He wanted his son, senior forward Chris Bagley, to experience the same atmosphere he had as he played for Benet in the 1978–1979 season. Greg Kwiatkowski was also Jim Bagley’s teammate in Benet, and his son, Joe Kwiatkowski, was in the Panthers’ starting lineup as well. “Two of us who played at Benet together and now our son’s play on [Oswego] together and for them to have a chance to play where we played is going to be a great night and great experience,” said the senior Bagley.

Alumni Gym apparently still had its charm in the second half for the Redwings, whose 15–17 score at halftime worsened into an 11-point deficit in the third quarter. Benet fell behind with a score of 21–29 at the start of the fourth quarter. From that point, the Redwings’ defense began to kick in. Oswego could make only 2 of its 13 field goals in the third quarter. Benet’s offense also gained momentum as center Frank Kaminsky scored all of his 9 points in the fourth quarter. A shot by senior Mike Runger brought the score to 31–31, and two consecutive driving layups by David Sobolewski gave Benet the lead that would last for the rest of the game.

“We hit a dry spell there, but let’s give credit where credit is due. Defense wins games and they are the best defensive team we’ve faced all year,” said Oswego coach Kevin Schnable.

Benet’s Matt Parisi led his team with 15 points, and Sobolewski scored 12. Oswego’s Andrew Ziemnik also scored 12.

Game modified to match New Zealand, police investigate

Saturday, April 26, 2008

A New Zealand teenager’s conversion of the popular Grand Theft Auto (GTA) video game is gaining popularity and the New Zealand Police are unhappy at their portrayal. Stacy O’Callaghan talked to Wikinews’ Gabriel Pollard about his mod.

The police cars and the police officers have been given a makeover to resemble the New Zealand versions. The planes were branded Air New Zealand, and ambulances were converted to match the local Wellington scheme, among various other changes.

The Beehive, Te Papa and the Sky Tower are looking to be added to the game also. O’Callaghan says, “We actually have the models for these buildings but haven’t figured out how to import them into the game.

“Theres plenty more to come, but thats our progress so far.”

Despite media reports stating the Police were investigating whether or not the mod breached the law prohibiting the unauthorised use of police insignia, O’Callaghan has not heard from the Police at all. He says that if the Police did contact him with their concerns then he might consider taking the download offline. “If people want to start getting all legal and stuff, then I will just remove it.

“I don’t want to offend anyone, I don’t hate NZ Police, I think they are actually one of the best Police forces in the world.”

The 17-year-old has said that his total conversion mod for the San Andreas version of GTA is “fairly popular”. “The mod has been fairly popular considering NZ’s population, and considering NZ’ers aren’t exactly game mod fanatics,” O’Callaghan says. He says the latest version of the mod he uploaded has so far had 466 downloads.

He has made the mod publicly available for any gamer who wants to play the New Zealand-branded version of the game and enjoy the game as much as he now does. O’Callaghan says he doesn’t want to make money off the game change.

The original plan was for the GTA modification to only transform the police cars into New Zealand branded cars but was later extended when O’Callaghan was contacted by other developers. He says, “I originally started with just the police cars back in November last year and left it at that, and then after uploading it people came to me saying they wanted to help out with it and so about a couple of months ago we started making this total conversion.”

O’Callaghan says in the future he would like to join the New Zealand Police and work in computer forensics, failing that he’d like to go into the IT industry.

Looking After Your Holiday Properties Abroad}

Submitted by: Chance

The idea of a holiday property can differ greatly depending on what your perception of a holiday actually is. Some like the freezing arctic weather to go skiing and snowboarding whilst others like to feel the warmth and see plenty of sunshine.

Wither it’s hand mitts and scarfs to keep warm or E45 to block out the sun rays if you decide to purchase a property abroad remember that it does need to be maintained. Depending on your work and relationship commitments this may prove to be a task that you find difficult to accomplish. On the other hand if you are lucky enough to spend more time living in your second home than you do in your main house then your difficulties may be far less.

This article will provide sound information to help you overcome some of the difficulties in owning a second property abroad.

The following points outline some of the most important tasks that need to be carried out even if your property is vacant although general property maintenance can vary depending on the property type which could be an apartment, townhouse or villa for example.

Garden Work

Repairs

Security

Garden Work

If you purchased an apartment then the chances are high that you have no garden to look after and can skip this task. However, if you purchased a villa or townhouse then you will almost certainly have a garden of reasonable size which could include a pool, trees, grass, BBQ area, flowers and many other things that need regular work to keep your place looking good.

Repairs

Some simple things like a plank of wood on your summer decking or fresh lick of paint for your house may need to be made. These types of repairs and easy to deal with and can be attended to when you are living in your property.

Some repairs can need to me made quickly when you are back home like the problems that strong storms and general strong weather can create. Wild weather could for instance damage your roof and if not dealt with speedily could potentially cost you more to fix than what the house is worth. This can be a real problem if you are somewhere else and have no intention on visiting for several months.

Security

No matter how pretty the area that your holiday property resides in you always need to take necessary precautions to prevent burglars and vandals. Plenty of good alarm systems are available on the market today some of which in the event that a burglar is breaking in can connected direct to the local police station to alert them. Other more advanced systems that use camera surveillance can allow further functionality to allow you to view the cameras on a computer from anywhere in the world.

Let me introduce a property management company

A property management company can take care of everything for you when your back at home. This includes looking after the garden, regularly visiting the property to check it’s general health and deal with any repairs that need to be done. They will report back to you regularly and let you know that everything is fine. They do have a cost but in the long run the money a property maintenance company saves you out weights the money that they cost you.
