Magnitude 5.8 earthquake in Virginia felt up and down U.S. east coast, Pentagon evacuated

September 22nd, 2022

Tuesday, August 23, 2011

A 5.8 earthquake struck 4 miles southwest of Mineral, Virginia, 80 miles south of Washington D.C., at 1:51 p.m. EDT (17:51 UTC) and lasted for 15–30 seconds. The quake had a magnitude of 5.8 with an epicenter 27 miles (43 km) east of Charlottesville, Virginia. A 2.8 aftershock was reported at 2:46 pm EDT (18:46 UTC).

According to Twitter reports, the quake was felt inland as far as Cleveland and Toronto and along the coast from Boston to Georgia. Police sergeant James Ryan, from South Brunswick, New Jersey stated that “The 911 line is flooding with calls right now. People want to know what happened. They want to know if there was an explosion.”

The United States Capitol and The Pentagon in Arlington were evacuated, as were police headquarters and city hall in New York City. Numerous minor injuries have been reported in Washington, D.C.; however, none of them are serious. There have been confirmed reports of damage at the Washington National Cathedral and the Smithsonian Castle. The Pentagon was also damaged when a burst pipe caused flooding. The North Anna Power Station lost offsite power and had to shut down, turning to four diesel generators to maintain cooling of the facility. Both the JFK and Newark airports were briefly shut down and the control towers were evacuated. A release from Amtrak stated that trains will be operating at reduced speed, but no damage has been found on any rail lines. The Washington Metro is also operating on reduced speed, with some stations closed down, while lines are evaluated.

In Boston, it was reported that the building at 111 Devonshire Street appeared to be leaning onto the adjacent building at 50 Milk Street, with fears that it could collapse. The street was blocked off while the Boston Fire Department investigated. However, it was determined that the buildings had always appeared like that. Nevertheless, the Boston Fire Department investigated the roof and the inside of 111 Devonshire St. After 30 minutes, the building was determined to be safe.

This is the second strongest earthquake to originate in Virginia since records have been kept, after the one recorded on May 31, 1897, near Giles County, which was estimated at a magnitude of 5.9.

The Dow initially dropped 50 points after the earthquake struck, but later increased over 100 points.

Saturn moon Enceladus may have salty ocean

September 20th, 2022

Thursday, June 23, 2011

NASA’s Cassini–Huygens spacecraft has discovered evidence for a large-scale saltwater reservoir beneath the icy crust of Saturn’s moon Enceladus. The data came from the spacecraft’s direct analysis of salt-rich ice grains close to the jets ejected from the moon. The study has been published in this week’s edition of the journal Nature.

Data from Cassini’s cosmic dust analyzer show the grains expelled from fissures, known as tiger stripes, are relatively small and usually low in salt far away from the moon. Closer to the moon’s surface, Cassini found that relatively large grains rich with sodium and potassium dominate the plumes. The salt-rich particles have an “ocean-like” composition and indicate that most, if not all, of the expelled ice and water vapor comes from the evaporation of liquid salt-water. When water freezes, the salt is squeezed out, leaving pure water ice behind.

Cassini’s ultraviolet imaging spectrograph also recently obtained complementary results that support the presence of a subsurface ocean. A team of Cassini researchers led by Candice Hansen of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona, measured gas shooting out of distinct jets originating in the moon’s south polar region at five to eight times the speed of sound, several times faster than previously measured. These observations of distinct jets, from a 2010 flyby, are consistent with results showing a difference in composition of ice grains close to the moon’s surface and those that made it out to the E ring, the outermost ring that gets its material primarily from Enceladean jets. If the plumes emanated from ice, they should have very little salt in them.

“There currently is no plausible way to produce a steady outflow of salt-rich grains from solid ice across all the tiger stripes other than salt water under Enceladus’s icy surface,” said Frank Postberg, a Cassini team scientist at the University of Heidelberg in Germany.

The data suggests a layer of water between the moon’s rocky core and its icy mantle, possibly as deep as about 50 miles (80 kilometers) beneath the surface. As this water washes against the rocks, it dissolves salt compounds and rises through fractures in the overlying ice to form reserves nearer the surface. If the outermost layer cracks open, the decrease in pressure from these reserves to space causes a plume to shoot out. Roughly 400 pounds (200 kilograms) of water vapor is lost every second in the plumes, with smaller amounts being lost as ice grains. The team calculates the water reserves must have large evaporating surfaces, or they would freeze easily and stop the plumes.

“We imagine that between the ice and the ice core there is an ocean of depth and this is somehow connected to the surface reservoir,” added Postberg.

The Cassini mission discovered Enceladus’ water-vapor and ice jets in 2005. In 2009, scientists working with the cosmic dust analyzer examined some sodium salts found in ice grains of Saturn’s E ring but the link to subsurface salt water was not definitive. The new paper analyzes three Enceladus flybys in 2008 and 2009 with the same instrument, focusing on the composition of freshly ejected plume grains. In 2008, Cassini discovered a high “density of volatile gases, water vapor, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, as well as organic materials, some 20 times denser than expected” in geysers erupting from the moon. The icy particles hit the detector target at speeds between 15,000 and 39,000 MPH (23,000 and 63,000 KPH), vaporizing instantly. Electrical fields inside the cosmic dust analyzer separated the various constituents of the impact cloud.

“Enceladus has got warmth, water and organic chemicals, some of the essential building blocks needed for life,” said Dennis Matson in 2008, Cassini project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

“This finding is a crucial new piece of evidence showing that environmental conditions favorable to the emergence of life can be sustained on icy bodies orbiting gas giant planets,” said Nicolas Altobelli, the European Space Agency’s project scientist for Cassini.

“If there is water in such an unexpected place, it leaves possibility for the rest of the universe,” said Postberg.

Acne: Going Through Hormonal Changes? Beware Of Acne!

September 20th, 2022

Submitted by: Joey River

Acne is more than just skin deep, there are more than one causes for acne and one of the most top rated is hormonal changes. Changes in hormones can be due to puberty or due to changes after age 30 or even during menopause can cause mild to severe acne, depending on your body constitution.

Teenagers with highest amount of hormonal activity going on in the body are most susceptible to acne. Not just the hormonal activity but eating habits of teenagers and general hygiene are other reasons that are likely to boost the acne.

It is very much necessary therefore, that acne should be taken care of earliest when signs start showing, and acne ignored for a long time can result into pimples that may leave ugly scars on skin, especially on face. Scars always stay on for a life time, unless exceptionally good quality skin that cures scars.

How does hormone activity result into acne formation? Highly active hormones, start processes which the body does not do normally, this also includes secretion of extra oil by skin glands. If the skin is not being kept clean enough, dead cells end up blocking skin pores. Extra oil secreted gets blocked inside skin pores because of the dead cells and results into acne.

Acne can then develop into various different stages that require to be taken care of more than you might require to get rid of acne. Acne might be noticeable sometimes, it becomes more obvious after it starts forming into white heads or black heads, taking care of acne at this stage often helps clear the pores and avoid the heads turning into pimples.

If proper care to remove black heads and white heads is not taken acne formation might run deeper and for pimples, which can do both, either make your face look ugly or leave scars.

There are certain home remedies you can do to take care of acne, these home remedies are very simple to follow and do, and in fact you can even include these remedies in your daily routine. Firstly, it is very important to take care of your skin especially those parts which are constantly exposed like your face. It is important to use a cleanser or exfoliating soap so that your skin pores remain open allowing oil to come out easily.

Secondly, you can try and remove any and all makeup you apply all day long so that makeup does not block your skin pores. Thirdly, take care of your diet, drink ample of water; eat healthy foods, including vegetables and all those foods that are rich in fiber. You can also start eating healthy amounts of salads for each meal. Avoid spicy and oily or fatty foods. Junk food too is strictly avoidable.

Fourthly, though dandruff is just one of the causes of skin problems, dandruff can keep on falling on skin and cause blockage of pores. This blockage too can lead to acne and later pimples. So taking care of your hair and getting rid of dandruff is necessary too.

Wikinews interviews India’s first female Paralympic medalist Deepa Malik

September 19th, 2022

Wednesday, September 14, 2016

Wikinews on Sunday interviewed Deepa Malik, India’s first female Paralympic medalist, who won the silver medal in the Women’s Shot Put F53 event finals, at the 2016 Summer Paralympics being held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Malik lost the gold medal to Bahrain’s Fatema Nedham, who had the best throw 4.76 metres, setting a new regional record in paralympic women’s shot put.

Arriving in Rio, Malik had initial trouble due to the airline losing her luggage; it didn’t all arrive until three days later: clothes, opening ceremony outfit and equipment including competition belts.

In early August there was a possibly that Malik might lose her spot on the Indian team going to Rio, with fellow female para athlete Karam Jyoti challenging Malik’s selection and the Sport’s Authority of Indian’s selection process at the High Court of Delhi. The high court ruled against the plaintiff.

Both of these events occurred against the wider backdrop of the Paralympic Committee of India being suspended by the International Paralympic Committee. The Sports Authority of India took final authority over the Paralympic Committee of India for sending a team to Rio, with agreement from the International Paralympic Committee; this arrangement allowed India to compete under their own flag at the 2016 Summer Paralympics.

((Wikinews)) Congratulations on your result.

Deepa Malik: Thank you so much.

((WN)) Even though you are currently waiting in terms of the end result of the protest.

DM: Absolutely, but I’m happy with my performance, I’m happy that I could improve and I could prove myself, there were a lot of questions back home on my selection and on my hard work. My single-minded focus that I had put into this journey of being a Paralympian. Well, I am just so anxious about the results.

((WN)) So how much did the court case and KLM losing your luggage impact on your preparations and your result today?

DM: Yes, but I’m happy that my husband was my coach here, and, so, I had huge moral support in terms of keeping my mind and everything in peace. Most of the equipment was available in the gym, we had to alter the training a bit like the throw days couldn’t happen, so we instead exercised. No, I think that is what sports teaches you, you can’t live on excuses, I never lived on excuses.

((WN)) You work around things.

DM: Yes, that’s what we do, that’s what a sportsman is suppose to do, rise again, and then fall and rise, and run, and I did exactly that.

((WN)) What message should other Indian women take away from your participation and result in Rio?

DM: This is going to be the first female medal that India would have ever won in Paralympics and as it is I’m working aggressively towards transforming this entire concept of empowerment for the women, especially the women in disabilities in my country. So I’m really happy that this medal give my voice more value, more strength, and I’ll be able to impact even more, though on the ninth of September the Prime Minister’s jury has awarded me with the award of Women Transforming India, I’m so happy that within three days of getting that award, I have added another feather to it and proved that yes this journey of ability beyond disability. And not just disability, this is a universal message that if women put their minds to their dreams they can balance it; age, gender, disability, is all a state of mind. If you put your passion and hard work, you can get it, and in the Indian scenario were they say infrastructure is a challenge, women participation that are taboo, religiously and psychologically, disabilities taken as a curse, dependability[?] increases because of lack of infrastructure, well, time to get rid of the excuses. We have to start erasing the excuses and believe your own self and that’s the message I’m carrying with all the activities that I do whether it is car rallying, motorbiking or swimming across a river, every record or every unique activity that I’ve undertaken and just below paralysis has been aimed at changing the stereotypical image of a women and also a women in disability. ?

((WN)) Will you and your daughter both be trying to represent India at the 2020 Games in Tokyo?

DM: I’m very sure about myself, but my daughter, though, she’s a Paralympian, yes, which again was considered a huge taboo in my society that oh my god both the mother and the daughter both have a physical disability, what is going to happen to these two, but we did good and she is working as a youth council representative in the Commonwealth countries, for the Paralympics specially, and her work though her foundation called Wheeling Happiness has earned her the young leader award from the Queen of England, so I guess her focus is now shifting to more on community service and empowering others and not just herself. And she is leaving on first of October to Loughborough to do her PhD doctorate programme in disability sports psychology, I’m very sure Loughborough is going to give her a huge amount of sports [inaudible] but how much time she going to decide to devote to sports and studies is her decision entirely. That’s her dream, her journey.

((WN)) How helpful was the Sports Authority of India in preparing and supporting your Rio ambitions??

DM: I think 100 per cent, because the biggest challenge we have back home is a customised training, or the infrastructure for that matter, so we were given the ability and the funds to train the way we wanted to train, and the funds were huge which were given to us, out accommodation, food, diet, physical therapist, psychologist, trainer, gym, everything was paid for, and customised, you want it and they give it. So I guess this was easy financially this time, because every expenses was taken care of, my husband could also take a sabbatical from his job and join my journey, and having him twenty-four seven and coaching me because he himself is an athlete, and have the best diet and counselling. I think it’s worked wonders, so I give shout out and a huge applaud.

((WN)) How important was it for you to have a carer in Rio?

DM: Yes, again we really have to appreciate the sports authority of India and also Paralympic Committee of India, which is going to start to function post-Rio in India. They were very very quick, they were very very adamant in giving the wheelchair people escorts. And I need help twenty four seven, I’m just below paralysed so it was really huge, emotionally, mentally, psychically training-wise, every way I think the situation was perfect.

((WN)) Thank you for your time.

DM: Thank you.

Roopkund Trek Is The Ideal Trekking Trail For Beginners}

September 16th, 2022

Roopkund trek is the ideal trekking trail for beginners

by

Romesh DuttIt takes about eight days to complete the Roopkund trek from Lohajung to Roopkund. This trekking trail is located in Uttarakhand a state in the north of India and Roopkund is located in the Himalayas. The trek is of moderate to difficult level and can be tried by beginners because it is not very long. This trek is very popular due to the high mountains, glistening rivers, low valleys, vast pastures, dense forests, and beautiful views. Don’t forget to take your camera along because you will be inspired to capture the beautiful scenery for posterity. Trekkers from all over the world come to the Himalayan mountains and nowadays it has become easy even for Indians to go on trekking holidays. This is because there are many adventure travel agencies which provide ready-made adventure vacation packages. These travel agencies take care of all the details of the trek like food, tents, sleeping bags, sleeping mats, cooking fuel and other items. It may be a good idea to carry some snacks and also remember to keep yourself hydrated. At the same time, make sure you have a couple of pairs of strong trekking shoes and 3-4 pairs of socks. It is also advisable to carry warm clothes because it can be cold in this region at any time of the year. It is not unusual to find snow even in the summer season. You will be trekking an approximate distance of 53 km at a stretch for eight days so it is necessary to be physically fit. For this it is essential to start preparing 2 months in advance. Make it a point to walk at least 2 hours daily preferably on uneven terrain. You can start with half an hour and slowly build up to 2 hours of brisk walking. If you are able to do this without feeling too much physical strain only then should you attempt trekking in the Roopkund region.Roopkund is essentially a lake in the Himalayas and is located at a height of 15,696 feet. Different treks start at different points and some of them start at Lohajung which is situated at a height of 3200 meters. This route has narrow and curvy roads which cross from one slope to another of the mountains. While you cross from one mountain to the other you can witness the splendid view of the mountains. Along the way you come across quaint villages like Didna where you can mingle with the friendly local people and enjoy their hospitality. Their culture is still unspoiled by the stain of modernization even though many tourists come here from all over the world. The villages of this area are still in their rural form and have maintained their cultures and traditions. If you are lucky you may be able to take part in some of the local festivals. Along the Roopkund trek Uttarakhand you will camp at many places like Ghora Latoni. These camps are great way to familiarize yourself with your fellow trekkers and make new friendships which may last a long time. Times spent together in overcoming the obstacles often give rise to situations where you have to motivate and inspire your fellow trekkers when they are feeling low. Similarly others may do the same for you. Trekking in groups of unknown people is a unique and singular experience which many people cherish for a lifetimeAuthor Bio:

Recall of Thomas the Tank Engine toys due to lead-paint fears

September 15th, 2022

Thursday, June 21, 2007

A recall issued last week for Thomas the Tank Engine toys made in China and containing lead-based paint, is the latest scare for consumers, and follows recent scandals involving Chinese-made pet food, pharmaceuticals, toothpaste and other toys, The New York Times has reported in a series of articles.

Last week, RC2, a U.S. toy company based in Oak Brook, Illinois, issued a recall for its popular wooden “Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends” train sets. The recall involved 1.5 million “Thomas Wooden Railway” vehicles and train sets sold at toy stores and various retailers across the U.S. from January 2005 through June 2007.

A subsequent recall has been issued in the United Kingdom, where Thomas the Tank Engine was originated in the 1940s as a character in a children’s story by the Reverend W.V. Awdry. Around 70,000 toys are involved in the U.K. recall, according to The Guardian.

“RC2 has determined that the surface paints on the recalled products contain lead. Lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects,” the Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a press release dated June 13. “Consumers should take the recalled toys away from young children immediately and contact RC2 Corp. for a replacement toy,” the commission said.

Those “adverse health effects” could include brain and nerve damage, especially in young children, as well as blood and brain disorders. Severe lead poisoning causes vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions, anemia, loss of appetite, headaches and in particularly high doses, coma and death.

In an article on Monday, The New York Times reported that recalls have been issued for 24 different toys in the U.S. in the past year, and every one of them was made in China. According to the Toy Industry Association, toys made in China account for around 70 percent to 80 percent of all the toys sold in the U.S., The Times said.

“These are items that children are supposed to be playing with,” Prescott Carlson was quoted as saying by The Times. Carlson is a co-founder of a child-safety website called Imperfect Parent, which tracks recalls of toys and other baby products. “It should be at a point where companies in the United States that are importing these items are held liable,” Carlson said.

RC2 would not comment to The Times, and a Consumer Product Safety Commission spokesman would not say how long ago the problem with the lead paint was discovered.

For a follow-up article on Tuesday, The Times visited a factory in Dongguan, in China’s Guangdong province, where the “Thomas and Friends” toys are made. The paper interviewed workers and took photos on the factory floor.

“You’re intruding,” a factory manager identified only as Zhong was quoted as telling the reporters. “Tell me, why exactly are you here?”

During the visit, a reporter, translator and a photographer were detained by factory officials, and released a day later after local police and government officials intervened.

The factory also produces other toys for RC2, including toy John Deere trucks, NASCAR racing models and M&M’s cars, The Times said. RC2 makes the toys under licenses from various companies. The “Thomas and Friends” toys are made under license from Hit Entertainment, which owns the “Thomas” brand.

According to RC2, items in the “Thomas and Friends” recall are:

 • Red James Engine & Red James’ # 5 Coal Tender
 • Red Lights & Sounds James Engine & Red James’ #5
 • Lights & Sounds Coal Tender
 • James with Team Colors Engine & James with Team Colors *#5 Coal Tender
 • Red Skarloey Engine
 • Brown & Yellow Old Slow Coach
 • Red Hook & Ladder Truck & Red Water Tanker Truck
 • Red Musical Caboose
 • Red Sodor Line Caboose
 • Red Coal Car labeled “2006 Day Out With Thomas” on the Side
 • Red Baggage Car
 • Red Holiday Caboose
 • Red “Sodor Mail” Car
 • Red Fire Brigade Truck
 • Red Fire Brigade Train
 • Deluxe Sodor Fire Station
 • Red Coal Car
 • Yellow Box Car
 • Red Stop Sign
 • Yellow Railroad Crossing Sign
 • Yellow “Sodor Cargo Company” Cargo Piece
 • Smelting Yard
 • Ice Cream Factory

Toys listed that are marked with codes containing “WJ” or “AZ” are not included in the recall.

Earlier, RC2 said that customers would have to cover shipping costs to return the toys to the company. It later agreed to cover postage after angry complaints by parents, The Times said in an article yesterday. Refunds will take about two months.

Australian Treasurer told to ‘try harder on welfare’

September 13th, 2022

Saturday, April 2, 2005

A professor from Australia’s most prestigious university said yesterday that Australian Treasurer, Peter Costello, “must try harder on welfare.” Professor Bob Gregory of the Australian National University and leading economist said, “If people could not hide on disability and sole parent pensions then [Mr Costello] couldn’t claim credit for the fall in unemployment.”

“In my view, the Treasurer has to come out openly and say that he has not been able to produce full-time jobs at a sufficient rate to get people off welfare. Either he has to wait until the economy generates unskilled jobs or he has to play around with the wage system.”

Another report relating to the Australian Social Security system was released yesterday by researchers at the University of Melbourne. It found that care-givers who look after mentally ill dependents claim significantly less stress when they engaged in work outside the home.

Behavioral Change Coaching:

Technical skill and certain behaviors that propel executives to the top are found to be detrimental to the newly earned Leadership positions within organizations. An adaptation needs to occur to leverage the star qualities of executives to improve organizational processes. An initial key commitment by the executive to take a committed active engagement to change behaviors to become a more effective leader is mandatory for the coaching engagement to begin and to be successful.

A true behavioral change takes time to become permanent and understanding the complete dynamics of all associated processes concerning our client is imperative to effectively and efficiently targeting the correct procedure for customized support.

Once an agreement is made to conduct a full coaching engagement, we have several initial meetings to form the foundation of trust, mutual understandings, barriers, processes, needs, requirements, actions, confidentiality, and accountability. We provide a full battery of assessments to provide a non-bias third party perception of beliefs, behaviors, personality, work styles, abilities, and competencies. Our 360 multi-rater reviews are trilaterally implemented through surveys, interviews, and observational reviews. Patterns are identified and comprehensive customized reports are created.

Coaching conversations are conducted and Client buy-in is essential:

A commitment to face the collected information

Accepting conflict and/or paradox

Make proper adjustments to correct negative feedback

Become aware of situations, perceptions, and why conflicts exist

Why the gap in communication is occurring

Understand strengths and weaknesses as related to the organization

Learning what behaviors are best at which times

How to adjust to the poor behaviors of others with tact and class

Form S.M.A.R.T. targeted goals for overall improvement

The level of behavioral change is correlated with the commitment level of the executive.

The executive coaching process identifies needed areas of change from gathered information. Asking open ended questions of executives concerning what behavioral developmental areas motivate them to make adjustments is critically important for success. The desired change needs to align with organizational values and has to improve performance on multiple levels. The coach-client relationship is a partnership that has a joint agreement to reach desired outcomes or goals. The executive is required to commit to the hard work needed to implement and sustain a positive change in life. The executive coach drives the pace and directional focus which is in the best interest of the client.

Trust and confidentiality are achieved and maintained by the coach throughout the engagement to enable the client to obtain a deeper understand of self, situation, and process that either limits or enhances performance. Executive coaching is about raising awareness and maximizing leadership strengths within situations that maximize results and overall satisfaction. Avoiding problems and acknowledging behaviors provide substantial benefits and enhancements in most workplace situations.

The knowledge economy has taken us by storm and has changed the way things are done on a permanent basis. The old ways to success are simply old. There are new behaviors, habits, and processes that are needed to win in our currently globalized economy and professional executive coaching is leading the way.
