Stuttering And Speech Therapy Ideas

March 6th, 2022

Stuttering (or stammering) is a voice disfluency, a speech disorder. When a person stutters, the normal flow of speech is disrupted by repetitions and/or prolongations of voice sounds. Frequently, an individual is also unable to start a word.

Child stuttering, toddler stuttering and adult stuttering are themes being studied by many scientists and speech specialists all around the world. The Stuttering Foundation of America, the National Stuttering Association, the National Center for Stuttering and individual speech therapists in general are all investigating why people stutter and finding effective and fast speech therapies.

Nevertheless, even though scientists have several theories and suspect a variety of causes for stuttering, the precise mechanisms causing this disability (also called stammering) are not understood. Some believe that many forms have genetic origins.

A common form of stuttering is neurogenic. Neurogenic stuttering arise from signal problems between the brain and nerves or muscles. In neurogenic stuttering, the brain is unable to adequately coordinate the different components of speech mechanism.

The disruptions of speech may be accompanied by tremors of the lips and/or jaw, rapid eye blinks and other movements. This disorder commonly becomes more severe when speaking in front of a group of people or on the phone. On the other hand, speaking alone and singing might generally improve it or disappear completely.

Over three million Americans stutter. Stuttering affects all ages, but most frequently, children between the ages of 2 and 6 are the most affected. Preschool and toddler stuttering are especially affected while they are developing their language. When they grow up, most of them improve or cure. One percent or less of adults stutters.

Many famous people stutter. Marilyn Monroe, Bruce Willis, Winston Churchill and Mel Tillis are only a few whose success was not impeded by stuttering. Their speech language issue did not stop them to excel and express themselves magnificently.

With these encoraging news about famous people succeeding in spite of their common issue, I end part 1 of these series of articles. Much more information can be found at a site dedicated to stuttering problems and resources, as well as a library of speech language pathology.

This is the end of Part 1 of Stuttering and speech therapy ideas. On next chapters I will be writing about different and effective therapies developed lately by researchers on the field of stammering or speech language pathology.

Investigation into Washington, D.C. Metro crash finds need for new safety rules

March 6th, 2022

Tuesday, July 27, 2010

An investigation into the fatal 2009 Washington Metro train collision conducted by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) called for new safety and maintenance rules. The report, released today, blamed the crash on the faulty automatic train-control system. The report also cited the use of dated 1000-Series train cars. The 2009 crash, which killed 9 and injured 80, occurred during the evening rush between the Takoma and Fort Totten stations on the Red Line.

NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman said that the system is currently regulated by state and local agencies. She called for Federal oversight. “Now it’s really time for them to step up to the plate and for Congress to address the issue,” Hersman said during the release of the findings.

In 2009, Hersman told Congress that Federal safety guidelines should be set saying “the state oversight system is not effective, they don’t have any teeth.” Currently the Federal government has control of interstate transit systems, not regional or local transit systems.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) said yesterday that it would replace all of it’s 1000-Series trains with newer models. After the crash, then WMATA general manager, John Catoe said that “the system is safe.” WMATA’s interim general manager Richard Sarles said that “We are committed to considering and following through on the findings and recommendations.”

Greek parliament passes austerity bill

March 3rd, 2022

Thursday, May 6, 2010

The Greek parliament has approved an austerity bill proposed by the government to help rescue the country’s ailing economy.

The proposal, which includes increases in taxes, as well as salary and pension cuts, passed with 172 members of parliament supporting, 121 opposing, and several abstaining; the proposal needed at least 151 votes to pass. There are 300 total parliament seats.

The vote comes after a debate that took the entire day. Meanwhile, rallies and strikes are being held around the country to protest against the measures; the protests have occasionally turned violent, with a firebomb attack on a bank killing three people yesterday.

The Eurozone and the International Monetary Fund had asked for austerity plans to be implemented so that Greece can access a rescue loan package worth US$146 billion in order not to default on debts. The austerity programme is estimated to save $38 billion. Greece also aims to lower the public deficit to less than 3% of the GDP in four years; at the moment it is at 13.6%.

Prime minister George Papandreou described the situation to parliament ahead of the vote, saying: “The situation today is simple – either we vote and implement the deal or we condemn the country to bankruptcy […] The future of Greece is at stake. The economy, democracy and social cohesion are being put to the test.”

Papandreou also expelled three Social deputies from his parliamentary team when they abstained from voting; however, his bloc still has a parliament majority of 157 MPs.

Finance minister George Papaconstantinou also commented that Greece will default on some of its $12 billion debt on May 19 if action is not taken, saying: “The state’s coffers don’t have that money. And because the only way for the country to avoid bankruptcy and suspension of payments is to take the money from our European partners and the International Monetary Fund.”

Opposition parties, however, say the measures will put too heavy a burden on the populace; the leader of the conservatives, Antonis Samaras, commented: “The dose of the medicine you are administering is in danger of killing the patient. You know that these measures have sparked a social explosion […] The citizens of this country have to believe there is a way out. Because whoever cuts pensions of €700 cannot convince anyone.”

Ransomware attack hits over 200 US companies, forces Swedish grocery chain to close

March 2nd, 2022

Monday, July 5, 2021

On Friday, a ransomware attack which initially targeted software company Kaseya spread to over 200 companies in the US through Kaseya’s network management software. Huntress Labs, a cybersecurity company, alleged the attack was carried out by REvil, a Russia-based ransomware group. Kaseya told its customers to stop using its services when it learned of the attack.

According to NBC News, the ransomware first spread to about 40 of Kaseya’s customers, which are mainly companies that manage Internet services for their customers, some of which manage them for thousands of companies. John Hammond, a security researcher at Huntress Labs, said that “It’s reasonable to think this could potentially be impacting thousands of small businesses”. Kaseya notified its customers of the attack on Friday afternoon and warned them to stop using its services immediately.

Business Insider reported REvil is a Russian-based organization which provides ransomware-as-a-service. BleepingComputer reported receiving a sample of the ransomware used in REvil’s attacks and says that they demand USD five million for the ransomed files to be decrypted, though it is unknown if every victim received a demand for that same amount. Fabian Wosar, Chief Technical Offier (CTO) at the Emsisoft security firm, said affected customers had received demands for USD 44,999.

Swedish grocery chain Coop was also affected by the attack, and had to close all 800 of its stores because its checkout tills could not process payments due to the ransomware. Speaking to Swedish Television, Therese Knapp, a Coop spokesperson, said “We have been troubleshooting and restoring all night, but have communicated that we will need to keep the stores closed today”. Swedish company Visma Esscom, which manages servers for businesses, was using Kaseya software, according to Reuters. Railway services in Sweden were also disrupted.

On Saturday, US President Joe Biden directed intelligence agencies to investigate who was behind the attack. He said that “we’re not certain” who is behind the attack, adding “[t]he initial thinking was it was not the Russian government but we’re not sure yet”. The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency stated that it is “taking action to understand and address the recent supply-chain ransomware attack”.

Canada’s west coast battles high winds

February 22nd, 2022

Thursday, November 16, 2006

Currently, there are blackouts, heavy rain, and high winds in British Columbia. Over 220,000 BC Hydro customers have no power. Buildings have already collapsed and trees have been knowed down. Five Vancouver rivers were in danger of flooding, which rain fell at 10 mm an hour for more than six hours at midday.

The steel frame of a four-storey building under construction in Vancouver collapsed. Construction workers escaped injury, luckily they were on a coffee break at the time of the incident. The steel frame crushed cars in a parking lot and missed a truck driver.

Citizens had to evacuate a subdivision of 30 homes. The winds smashed trees into houses in West Vancouver.

“We have some real fears here with electrical problems,” said Captain Rob Jones Cook of the Vancouver Fire Department. “This is impinging on electrical poles and lamp standards. We also have hydro bus lines running down two sides of the building.” The Vancouver Fire Department says they have no idea as to why the building collapsed.

Winds are gusting at more than 100 kilometres an hour (62 mph) in some areas and rainfall amounts of 50 to 130 millimetres.

According BC Hydro spokeswoman Elisha Moreno, the hardest-hit areas are Vancouver, Surrey, Langley, Abbotsford and Mission, B.C. “We’re trying to be optimistic and hoping it’s by end of day today, but there may very well be customers that are into the early-morning hours before restoration,” Moreno said.

Extensive ferry cancellations, road closures, and massive power outages are in effect until the storm ends.

The RCMP have advised people to stay home and off the highway.

The same heavy weather has also affected nearby Washington State, USA.

Russia and China sign major gas pipeline deal for 30 years

February 22nd, 2022

Saturday, February 5, 2022

On Friday, Russia signed a 30-year deal to supply gas to China, strengthening the energy alliance between the two countries. President Putin met with his counterpart Xi Jinping, promising to increase trade exports from the Russian Far East region to China. The meeting took place while the Russian president was on a visit to China for the 2022 Winter Olympics.

With this new deal, Russia aims to increase its gas supply to China by 10 billion cubic metres per year, of a total supply of 48 billion cubic metres per year. The new project is estimated to be worth USD117.5 billion. Russian energy giant Gazprom has agreed to take part in the deal by supplying the gas to China National Petroleum Corporation. A statement released by Gazprom indicates the project is due to start in two to three years.

The Russian president expressed appreciation for the deal by saying that, “a step forward was made in the gas industry”. Russia already supplies liquefied natural gas to China via the Power of Siberia pipeline. The deal will be denominated in Euros due to efforts by both countries to divert their foreign trade away from US dollars.

Weight Loss Surgery Last Resort Or Not?

February 21st, 2022

Submitted by: John A. Ross

Given the large number of overweight people nowadays, weight loss is a big topic. With the advance in medicine and surgical techniques, many people start to think about having a weight loss surgery done to escape the dreaded weeks and months of following an exercise and diet regimen. Unfortunately even though the idea seems amazing, the real problems with weight loss surgery are only known by a few people. Hopefully we can shed some light with this article and show you why following a diet and exercise program are still the best way to go to lose weight.

The problem with weight loss surgery is that there is a rather large correlation between people getting a weight loss procedure done and committing suicide. I will show you what I mean in the paragraph below.

The procedure called bariatric surgery is done to minimize the size of the patient’s stomach. This helps to speed up fat loss. The chance of dying from the procedure is about 1%, while the chance of having complications is about 40%. Many of the patients who undergo this procedure also have some other health issues, such as diabetes. They are therefore already at a higher risk of a natural cause of death than the average population.

In reviews from the New England Journal of Medicine or studies performed at the University of Pennsylvania, researchers found that people who undergo this type of surgery are at a higher risk of committing suicide that people who did not undergo this surgery. Now this might seem as a big deal, but given that these findings were confirmed on three different occasions, is alarming.

Experts have not found the reason behind this phenomenon, but it seems that there is an unrealistic expectation in connection with the surgery that people fall for. When the surgery is done they fall into a hole, not able to recover psychologically.

This ties back into what we mentioned above, as the problem indeed seems to be that the people undergoing surgery imagine themselves looking absolutely amazing, while the surgery can only make you get thinner faster. It will not turn you from this to that overnight. Another problem in connection with this seems to be the lack of a feeling of self-fulfillment or accomplishment, as there is a real difference between going in for a surgery and waking up lighter or with a smaller stomach, and working your way to your dream weight.

All in all as you can see, weight loss surgery is really the last resort for you to turn if you have tried everything else available, and even then you will have to think long and hard about the decision to have the procedure done. That kind of surgery poses some real risks so it is highly advisable to be avoided unless it is absolutely necessary. But for the majority of the population no such need exists so seeking a natural weight loss plan and avoiding invasive techniques is the prudent thing to do when it comes to weight loss.
