Game modified to match New Zealand, police investigate

December 4th, 2021

Saturday, April 26, 2008

A New Zealand teenager’s conversion of the popular Grand Theft Auto (GTA) video game is gaining popularity and the New Zealand Police are unhappy at their portrayal. Stacy O’Callaghan talked to Wikinews’ Gabriel Pollard about his mod.

The police cars and the police officers have been given a makeover to resemble the New Zealand versions. The planes were branded Air New Zealand, and ambulances were converted to match the local Wellington scheme, among various other changes.

The Beehive, Te Papa and the Sky Tower are looking to be added to the game also. O’Callaghan says, “We actually have the models for these buildings but haven’t figured out how to import them into the game.

“Theres plenty more to come, but thats our progress so far.”

Despite media reports stating the Police were investigating whether or not the mod breached the law prohibiting the unauthorised use of police insignia, O’Callaghan has not heard from the Police at all. He says that if the Police did contact him with their concerns then he might consider taking the download offline. “If people want to start getting all legal and stuff, then I will just remove it.

“I don’t want to offend anyone, I don’t hate NZ Police, I think they are actually one of the best Police forces in the world.”

The 17-year-old has said that his total conversion mod for the San Andreas version of GTA is “fairly popular”. “The mod has been fairly popular considering NZ’s population, and considering NZ’ers aren’t exactly game mod fanatics,” O’Callaghan says. He says the latest version of the mod he uploaded has so far had 466 downloads.

He has made the mod publicly available for any gamer who wants to play the New Zealand-branded version of the game and enjoy the game as much as he now does. O’Callaghan says he doesn’t want to make money off the game change.

The original plan was for the GTA modification to only transform the police cars into New Zealand branded cars but was later extended when O’Callaghan was contacted by other developers. He says, “I originally started with just the police cars back in November last year and left it at that, and then after uploading it people came to me saying they wanted to help out with it and so about a couple of months ago we started making this total conversion.”

O’Callaghan says in the future he would like to join the New Zealand Police and work in computer forensics, failing that he’d like to go into the IT industry.

Looking After Your Holiday Properties Abroad}

December 2nd, 2021

Submitted by: Chance

The idea of a holiday property can differ greatly depending on what your perception of a holiday actually is. Some like the freezing arctic weather to go skiing and snowboarding whilst others like to feel the warmth and see plenty of sunshine.

Wither it’s hand mitts and scarfs to keep warm or E45 to block out the sun rays if you decide to purchase a property abroad remember that it does need to be maintained. Depending on your work and relationship commitments this may prove to be a task that you find difficult to accomplish. On the other hand if you are lucky enough to spend more time living in your second home than you do in your main house then your difficulties may be far less.

This article will provide sound information to help you overcome some of the difficulties in owning a second property abroad.

The following points outline some of the most important tasks that need to be carried out even if your property is vacant although general property maintenance can vary depending on the property type which could be an apartment, townhouse or villa for example.

Garden Work

Repairs

Security

Garden Work

If you purchased an apartment then the chances are high that you have no garden to look after and can skip this task. However, if you purchased a villa or townhouse then you will almost certainly have a garden of reasonable size which could include a pool, trees, grass, BBQ area, flowers and many other things that need regular work to keep your place looking good.

Repairs

Some simple things like a plank of wood on your summer decking or fresh lick of paint for your house may need to be made. These types of repairs and easy to deal with and can be attended to when you are living in your property.

Some repairs can need to me made quickly when you are back home like the problems that strong storms and general strong weather can create. Wild weather could for instance damage your roof and if not dealt with speedily could potentially cost you more to fix than what the house is worth. This can be a real problem if you are somewhere else and have no intention on visiting for several months.

Security

No matter how pretty the area that your holiday property resides in you always need to take necessary precautions to prevent burglars and vandals. Plenty of good alarm systems are available on the market today some of which in the event that a burglar is breaking in can connected direct to the local police station to alert them. Other more advanced systems that use camera surveillance can allow further functionality to allow you to view the cameras on a computer from anywhere in the world.

Let me introduce a property management company

A property management company can take care of everything for you when your back at home. This includes looking after the garden, regularly visiting the property to check it’s general health and deal with any repairs that need to be done. They will report back to you regularly and let you know that everything is fine. They do have a cost but in the long run the money a property maintenance company saves you out weights the money that they cost you.

North Korea receives transfer of $25 million

November 30th, 2021

Wednesday, June 20, 2007

US$25 million of North Korean funds previously frozen in a Macau bank has been transferred to Pyongyang, the North Korean capital. The money was released late last week, and transferred from Macau to the Federal Reserve in New York City, and from there to a Russian bank and then into an account controlled by the North Korean government.

Pressure is mounting from the international community on the Pyongyang government to shut down its Yongbyong nuclear reactor. North Korea has been refusing to move forward due to the freezing of these funds in 2005.

Fitness And health – Vitamin D Rules!

by

Walter Derksen

If you want to be a fitness and health expert you need vitamin D

We are now into the fall season, and it is getting tougher to get the natural sunlight you need every day to keep you healthy and strong.

What’s for lunch today? On a cool day a bowl of soup usually does away with the chill. October is the month the sweaters come out and it gets increasingly hard to get the sun you need.

If you live in Canada or a northern place this is when you look for alternative ways to get vitamin D into your system.

You can get vitamin D from some foods like fish, milk, yogurt and margarine but it might not be enough and so popping a pill is the next best thing to sitting on a secluded tropical beach soaking up those rays.

Vitamin D really is important, not only for Canadians but for anyone wanting to stay healthy all year around.

Healthy bones was most times thought of as being the main role of vitamin D. This is true but there are other benefits as well.

General health may be affected including diseases like cancer, heart disease, type-2 diabetes and even autism and chronic back pain. Depression could also be a result of a lack of vitamin D in your system.

Does the lack of vitamin D make you sick? Autoimmune disorders where the body turns on itself as in type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis are because of a weak immune system and vitamin D or lack of could be what is causing this.

The cause of these diseases may be more complex than a lack of sun in your system. There is often a bacterial infection causing a lack of vitamin D making the immune system very weak.

Because of this you will be susceptible to more infections and a vicious circle begins. So now we must try to reverse this scenario to limit these autoimmune diseases.

There is now the opportunity to get personalized recommendation for good health and reduce the risk of disease because of blood testing done by physicians.

You really need 75 nmol/L to have good protection from disease, but like most people you are probably at 30-60 nmol/L.

Every person reacts differently to supplementation but if you are at30 nmol/L you would need about 2,000 IU to meet standards for good health. These levels can be reached even after good sun exposure with increased levels of supplementation.

It is hard this time of year to get enough sun to supply the vitamin D you need through the skin. Once your shadow grows longer than you are, which in fall is the case you can’t produce enough vitamin D in your skin.

For fitness and health the next best thing is then to swallow a pill or take liquid vitamin D drops which you can mix in with food or drink. This will help you to improve your health. Exercise and diet will provide vitamins, energy as well as strengthen the immune system. Get started now with this complete guide. Just click here

Sweeping bank regulatory overhaul passed in US House of Representatives

November 23rd, 2021

Thursday, July 1, 2010

Never again, never again should Wall Street greed bring such suffering to our country.

The US House of Representatives passed a significant overhaul of financial regulations that strengthens the government’s hold on banks and also creates a new federal agency to oversee consumer lending on Wednesday.

“Never again, never again should Wall Street greed bring such suffering to our country,” said House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-MD after the bill was passed by the House.

The House vote, which was mainly split over party lines, had 237 representatives in favor and 192 opposed. Only three Republicans voted for the bill, though this was an increase from December, when no Republicans voted for the previous version of the bill. This new bill combines the old December bill with a newer one passed by the more conservative Senate last month.

But even though the Senate passed their bill already, support for the one passed Wednesday looks a little uncertain. Since earlier this year the Democrats lost their 60 vote filibuster majority, they had to secure the votes of a few more moderate Republican senators to beat back procedural hurdles. Democrats struggled to win the full support of these senators even after backing down on a US$19 billion tax on big banks and hedge funds, which had been opposed by Republicans. This group of senators includes Scott Brown, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins. All three voted for the Senate bill last month.

The $19 billion tax was inserted in the 2000 page plus bill late last week, which came as a surprise to many large banks. Brown initially objected to the tax, and threatened to vote against the entire bill if the tax was not removed. Instead, the new way of financing the bill’s cost will be using $11 billion in cash that came from ending the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), a bill passed in 2008 that bailed out struggling banks, and also by increasing rates that banks pay to insure bank deposits to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. However, the increase in rates won’t affect banks with assets of less then $10 billion.

On Wednesday, Collins wrote a statement saying that she now planned to vote for the bill. However, Brown remained on the fence and said he would use recess during the week of July 4th to examine the details of the bill. He credited Senate Banking Committee Chairman Chris Dodd for “thinking outside the box” in coming with a new way to fund the bill.

Other Republicans were much more opposed to the bill, and attacked it for failing to place tighter restrictions on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the mortgage giants that helped trigger the economic and housing meltdowns. House Republican leader John Boehner compared the new bill to using a nuclear weapon on an ant. In response, President Barack Obama said in a speech in Racine, Wisconsin that “[i]f the Republican leader is that out of touch with the struggles facing the American people, he should come here to Racine and ask people if they think the financial crisis was an ant.”

Twenty-five children injured in bus-truck collision in Florida

US Nationwide Pollution Permit Restrictions Upheld

November 16th, 2021

Wednesday, October 4, 2006

The US Army Corps of Engineers decision to place restrictions on issuance of nationwide pollution permits has been upheld by a federal court. In National Association of Home Builders v. Army Corps of Engineers, the District Court for the District of Columbia found that the Corps of Engineers had not acted in an “arbitrary” or “capricious” manner in changing the terms and conditions for issuance of a national pollution permit, including reducing the size of area into which pollutants may be discharged from 10 acres to 1 acre, raising the threshold for requiring additional permits from 1 acre to 1/10 acre,

A nationwide permit allows an organization to engage in certain industrial activities on a national basis (such as mining and construction), reducing the amount of paperwork and filings needed for otherwise minor environmental impacts, as opposed to an ordinary permit for a specific location which will engage in activities which generate water pollution.

Due to concerns over the amount of discharge taking place in waterways, the Corps of Engineers began in the 1980s to reduce the authority granted by nationwide permits and to bar use of the permits in certain ecologically sensitive areas.

Some industry groups, including the plaintiff in the above case, The National Association of Home Builders, sued the Corps of Engineers in 2000 over the change in an attempt to block its implementation. Environmental groups, including the Sierra Club, were given permission to intervene in the case in support of the actions of the Corps.

Environmental groups were pleased with the decision, but are concerned over other actions of the Bush Administration, such as the attempts to weaken provisions of the 2002 Clean Water Act to allow additional dumping of construction and mining waste into waterways as fill material.

Latest trial of the One Laptop Per Child running in India; Uruguay orders 100,000 machines

November 15th, 2021

Thursday, November 8, 2007

India is the latest of the countries where the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) experiment has started. Children from the village of Khairat were given the opportunity to learn how to use the XO laptop. During the last year XO was distributed to children from Arahuay in Peru, Ban Samkha in Thailand, Cardal in Uruguay and Galadima in Nigeria. The OLPC team are, in their reports on the startup of the trials, delighted with how the laptop has improved access to information and ability to carry out educational activities. Thailand’s The Nation has praised the project, describing the children as “enthusiastic” and keen to attend school with their laptops.

Recent good news for the project sees Uruguay having ordered 100,000 of the machines which are to be given to children aged six to twelve. Should all go according to plan a further 300,000 machines will be purchased by 2009 to give one to every child in the country. As the first to order, Uruguay chose the OLPC XO laptop over its rival from Intel, the Classmate PC. In parallel with the delivery of the laptops network connectivity will be provided to schools involved in the project.

The remainder of this article is based on Carla G. Munroy’s Khairat Chronicle, which is available from the OLPC Wiki. Additional sources are listed at the end.
