Wikinews interviews Darcy Richardson, Democratic Party presidential challenger to Barack Obama

August 12th, 2021

Friday, November 25, 2011

U.S. Democratic Party presidential candidate Darcy Richardson of Florida took some time to answer a few questions from Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn.

Richardson, 55, is a political activist that helped form the New Democrats in 1989 and founded the progressive Battleground Blog earlier this year. He is also a political historian, and has authored six books covering third parties and presidential elections, including A Nation Divided: The 1968 Presidential Campaign (2002). His current work, The Spirit of ’76: Eugene McCarthy’s Struggle for Open Politics, chronicles the late Democratic Senator Eugene McCarthy’s 1976 presidential campaign for which he volunteered. Richardson admires McCarthy, and served as manager for his 1988 presidential run. Recently, Richardson advised Brian Moore’s Socialist Party USA presidential campaign in 2008.

In addition, Richardson himself has sought political office, albeit unsuccessfully. In 1980, he ran for Pennsylvania Auditor General, and in 1988, vied for one of Pennsylvania’s U.S. Senate seats as a member of the Consumer Party. Last year, he ran for Lieutenant Governor of Florida as the running mate of gubernatorial candidate Farid Khavari.

Richardson has criticized President Barack Obama’s policies for being too similar to those of former President George W. Bush. He hoped to convince several prominent progressives to challenge Obama in the Democratic primaries, but none were available to do so. Last month, Richardson decided to begin a campaign himself and announced through his Battleground Blog that he would challenge Obama in the Democratic Party primaries as a progressive candidate. So far, he has qualified for the New Hampshire primary in January and the Missouri primary in February. In an interview with the Independent Political Report, Richardson proclaimed his campaign slogan as “no fourth term for George W. Bush.”

Donald Trump reacts to ‘Pimp’ comments

August 12th, 2021

Friday, December 29, 2006

Real estate tycoon Donald Trump on CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 reacted to Rosie O’Donnell’s comments about him on the The View.

“Rosie has some real problems,” Trump said on Anderson Cooper 360. “Rosie’s a loser. She’s been a loser always.”

It started when Miss USA Tara Conner was caught under age drinking. Trump, the owner of the Miss Universe Organization, gave her a second chance. Rosie O’Donnell called him a “Pimp” on her personal blog and said he has no right to be “the moral compass for 20-year-olds in America” on The View, which she co-hosts.

“Rosie got mentally beaten up by me,” Trump told The Post yesterday, “because she’s a mental midget, a low-life.”

“It’s too bad a degenerate is able to get away with things like that,” Trump said yesterday. “I met Tara the night of the pageant and didn’t see her again until she got into trouble.”

Trump said that he would sue her over her comment.

“It will never end on my behalf because I’ve exposed Rosie for what she is: a very dumb human being,” Trump told the Associated Press. “She’s got no intelligence, but I’ve known that for a long time. Unfortunately, Rosie’s pulled the wool over the public.”

When CNN contacted O’Donnell, one of her representatives said she was unavailable for comment. CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 also said that she is welcome to comment anytime.

U.S. superbug expected to emerge in Canada

August 12th, 2021

Wednesday, January 3, 2007

An infectious superbug spreading in the United States is to “emerge in force” in Canada, doctors fear. The bacteria have been reported popping up in day care centers and locker rooms across the U.S. Usually elderly or very ill hospital patients get the disease.

More than 2 million U.S. residents are infected every year, the Centers for Disease Control estimates.

An article in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) on Tuesday said that Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are “spreading with alarming rapidity.” The bacteria can cause boils, pimples, or in extreme cases, flesh-eating disease, and more.

“The resistant bacteria is an old foe with new fangs: a pathogen combining virulence, resistance and an ability to disseminate at large,” wrote Dr. John Conly, medical professor and an infectious disease specialist at the University of Calgary.

British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario are the provinces which already have had MRSA in hospitals.

A 30-year-old Calgary, Alberta man died last year of lung abscesses associated with the infection, as well as a three-month old toddler in Toronto, Ontario.

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Alex Rios, last summer, suffered from an infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus in his leg. Pitcher Ty Taubenheim had a similar infection on his foot.

Doctors are currently investigating some Calgary residents, who could be one of the first Canadian reports of MRSA outside of a hospital setting.

Get Well Soon Cancer Gift Baskets 5 Tips

August 11th, 2021

By Susan Willis

Despite all of the powers of modern-day medicine, cancer is one of those diseases that still presents doctors and patients with enormous challenges. On the one hand, great strides have been made in the successful treatment of many forms of cancer. However, depending upon the particular stage at which cancer was detected and the type of cancer it is, cancer can force a patient to fight hard for his or her life.

Cancer affects not only the patient, but also the caretakers, friends, family and colleagues in that person’s life. At the very least, being diagnosed with cancer will require that the patient go through one or more treatments to eradicate it from the body. Often, this process can be very involved and drawn-out. In fact, depending upon the type of treatment, the treatment process for cancer patients can be almost as brutal as the disease itself.

All of this can and should engender sympathy in the people that surround the patient, as well as a desire to help.

Knowing Someone With Cancer

If you know someone who has been diagnosed with cancer, your first impulse is probably to want to reach out a helping hand to that person. Or, maybe you just want to give him or her a hug and tell them everything is going to be okay.

In any case, it is not always easy to know how to reach out to this person. It can feel awkward to call them and ask how they are feeling. After all, how are they supposed to answer that question if they are feeling terrible that day? There are no easy answers.

Still, that doesn’t mean you should just not reach out. In fact, reaching out can be the best medicine for both of you.

Your Words And Actions Speak Volumes

Remember that making frequent contact with this person is one of the best things you can do to make them feel better. How – and how often – you should reach out depend on the situation. However, at the minimum, your words should express that you are thinking of them and that you care.

No matter what, any effort you expend to show the person you care will be well-received. Even if it feels a little awkward, writing a letter, calling or visiting the person will be appreciated. It is the best medicine.

And, if you have the budget, consider giving them a gift.

Get-Well-Soon Cancer Gift Baskets – 5 Tips

If you are thinking of giving a get-well-soon gift basket to a cancer patient you know, here are 5 tips for designing or buying the right gift:

1. Focus on their interests: The first thing to remember is that you are buying something for them, not yourself. Don’t be the gift giver that gives someone else the gift you secretly want for yourself! Instead, think about 2-3 things this person really loves.

2. Choose a theme and list out related items: Now, focus on a theme from #1 above (example: baseball, knitting, race cars, business, gardening, etc.) and make a list of at least 8-10 small, inexpensive items that reflect that theme for inclusion in your basket. Get creative!

3. Remain aware of their special dietary needs: Note: if you want to throw food items into the mix, be sure to check with the person’s doctor or spouse to make sure you are taking their dietary needs into account.

4. Keep in mind any restricted activities: Make sure that you are not buying items that they cannot use right away. For example, a new golf club or sports water bottle may not be the best choice – it could serve to just make the person feel frustrated that they are limited in terms of their physical range right now.

5. Keep an eye toward fun and amusement: This is a pretty serious time in this person’s life, so keep the theme light and fun. Think amusement, excitement, and entertainment. In the end, these are the things that brighten the spirit and lighten the mood.

Keep these 5 tips in mind as you design the right gift basket for a cancer patient you know.

Teenage boys rape 13-year-old in Zurich, film act on cellphone

August 9th, 2021

Friday, November 17, 2006

A group of 13 teenage boys raped a 13-year old school girl in Zurich last weekend, reports the website of the German language newspaper 20 Minuten. The report says that the girl was raped repeatedly and the act was filmed on mobile phones.

Six of the suspects are Swiss nationals, two come from Serbia and Montenegro, one comes from Italy, two from the Republic of Macedonia, one from the Dominican Republic and one from Bosnia and Hercegovina. All live in Zurich.

All the suspects were arrested on Thursday. Police secured 3 mobile phones. Police say that securing the phones ensures the movies don’t get published on the Internet and cannot spark potential copycat acts.

The alleged act took place in the flat of an 18-year-old colleague of a 15-year-old friend of the victim. The victim and four of the arrested suspects attend the same school Schulhaus Buhnrain in Zurich Seebach.

According to 20 Minuten, the families of the perpetrators have now massively threatened the victim.

Verena Lang Temperli, a school official, told 20 Minuten that this case is a problem of society itself, not a problem of the school.

Edmund White on writing, incest, life and Larry Kramer

August 8th, 2021

Thursday, November 8, 2007

What you are about to read is an American life as lived by renowned author Edmund White. His life has been a crossroads, the fulcrum of high-brow Classicism and low-brow Brett Easton Ellisism. It is not for the faint. He has been the toast of the literary elite in New York, London and Paris, befriending artistic luminaries such as Salman Rushdie and Sir Ian McKellen while writing about a family where he was jealous his sister was having sex with his father as he fought off his mother’s amorous pursuit.

The fact is, Edmund White exists. His life exists. To the casual reader, they may find it disquieting that someone like his father existed in 1950’s America and that White’s work is the progeny of his intimate effort to understand his own experience.

Wikinews reporter David Shankbone understood that an interview with Edmund White, who is professor of creative writing at Princeton University, who wrote the seminal biography of Jean Genet, and who no longer can keep track of how many sex partners he has encountered, meant nothing would be off limits. Nothing was. Late in the interview they were joined by his partner Michael Caroll, who discussed White’s enduring feud with influential writer and activist Larry Kramer.

Communications Strategies With A Difference

August 8th, 2021

Submitted by: Jenny Kettlewell

We all know the most common communications strategies that are used in our everyday life: telephones, mobile telephones, pagers, walkie-talkies, CB radios and many others that we simply couldn t imagine doing without. But there are literally millions of different ways, both verbal and not verbal, that humans and other living creatures communicate with each other. They don t all involve electronic devices; here are a few of the more unusual ones we have uncovered.

A Gentle Touch

Most people are familiar with the poignant story of Helen Keller, a blind and deaf child, who was brought out of her life of isolation by the tender and patient work of her teacher, Anne Sullivan. Miss Sullivan used the techniques of touch and feeling in her communications strategies to unlock Helen Keller s dark and silent life. From the first moment of their meeting, when she spelled out the letters of the word doll into Helen s palm representing the gift she had brought her, Anne Sullivan was on her way to creating their very own private communications strategies. Within weeks Helen had had a major breakthrough and was able to name all the familiar objects in her limited world. Helen Keller became the first deaf and blind person to ever earn a degree, and she went on to become a world-renowned author and public speaker – all thanks to her dedicated teacher.

Equestrian Etiquette

Any animal owner can attest to the fact that they can communicate with their furry companions in many different ways and on many different levels. Dogs and other animals can learn simple verbal commands very successfully; but even without words, animals can often read their master s body language and even their stance. One pairing in which non-verbal communications strategies are tested to their fullest extent is in the elegant art of dressage. Commonly referred to as horse ballet , the aim of dressage is to get the animal to execute a series of complicated moves, at the direction of the rider, in an effortless and relaxed manner. Dressage ranges from basic levels of movement right up to Olympic-standard programmes and even at its simplest, it is imperative that the communication between horse and rider is implicit. A skilled rider knows how to apply commands with a minimum of effort and a well-trained, even-tempered horse will respond in kind.

ET Phone Home

When it comes to extra-terrestrials and UFOs there are not too many fence-sitters; you are either a die-hard sceptic or totally convinced we are not alone here in this huge universe. One thing the believers must take credit for is their determination to developing communications strategies in order to talk to whoever or whatever is out there. From signalling the universe on giant homemade satellite dishes, right down to alleged telepathic mobile phone conversations with aliens, people have been claiming success for many years. As far back as 1952, Jack Sarfatti, a respected quantum physicist claimed he was receiving messages from aliens through his home telephone. He maintains that the wisdom imparted to him in these calls went on to assist his highly successful career.

Former Timberwolf Eddie Griffin dies at 25

August 7th, 2021

Friday, August 24, 2007

Former National Basketball Association (NBA) player Eddie Griffin died on August 17, 2007, at age 25 due to injuries sustained in a car crash, the Harris County medical examiner’s office confirmed on Tuesday.

The former Minnesota Timberwolves forward, who was waived in March for violating the League’s substance abuse program, ignored a railroad warning, drove his SUV through a barrier, and collided with a moving train at about 1:30 a.m., according to Houston Police. His vehicle caught fire and was soon engulfed in flames.

No identification was found and the body was badly burned. For that reason, dental records were used to identify him. Griffin, who played college Basketball at Seton Hall University, played for the Houston Rockets from 2001–2003, and the Minnesota Timberwolves from 2004–2007. The five-year veteran had been battling alcoholism since leaving Seton Hall. He is survived by his three-year-old daughter Amaree.

Cargo ship Arctic Sea may be found

August 5th, 2021

Saturday, August 15, 2009

A cargo ship spotted off the African island nation of Cape Verde could be the missing MV Arctic Sea.

The Maltese flagged MV Arctic Sea disappeared off the French coast sometime after July 29. Owned by the Russian Arctic Sea company she was operated by the Finnish Solchart Management company and had a Russian crew.

French intelligence sources have found a ship matching the Arctic Sea’s description about 400 Nautical miles north of São Vicente.

The Arctic Sea was on a scheduled route from the Finnish seaport of Pietarsaari to the Algerian seaport of Béjaïa with a cargo of timber when it was boarded in Swedish waters between the islands Öland and Gotland on the night of July 24. The alleged boarders left the ship the same day according to its crew and the ship continued her voyage although it would have been expected to anchor at the nearest port.

The last official contact with the ship was with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency in Britain on July 28. Viktor Matveyev, the director of Solchart Management says the ship radioed that it was off the coast of Portugal on July 31. The 98-meter-long ship has so far not reached the Straits of Gibraltar and is now being sought by the Portuguese Navy and Russian Navy.

If proven this could be the first case of piracy in Europe in the modern era. There is speculation as to the reason for the ship’s hijacking, as its cargo of wood, valued at 1.3 million euros, is not especially valuable. Suggestions include possible contraband, and the possibility of a commercial dispute between the crew or some other party and the ship’s owners.

What are Forklifts? An Introduction

by

Robert Foster

If you have a warehouse then you would most likely need one or two forklifts. Forklifts are a kind of machine capable of lifting things that weigh thousands of pounds. Forklifts resemble a small truck with two metal forks on its front that are used to lift very heavy cargos. Forklift operators should move forklifts forward until its forks can under the cargo, lifting the cargo in the air by moving the forks. Forklifts forks are also called blades or tines and are normally made out of steel. It is capable of lifting up a few tons.

Depending on your preference, you can choose a forklift that is powered by gasoline, propane or electricity. If you are choosing an electric forklift then you should know that it relies on batteries for it to run perfectly. Electric forklift, however, are hard to maintain and its fuel may cost you a lot. Many companies like electric forklift because it doesnt give of harmful fumes like gas powered machines do.

Some forklifts are not only used indoors but also outdoors. Rough terrain forklifts are designed to be used outside having the capability to lift the heaviest of cargos. It usually operates on gasoline but you can also find some that operates on diesel and natural gas. Rough terrain forklifts also have heavy duty tires making it possible to be driven on rough surfaces outdoors.

Following safety precautions when using a forklift is vital to the safety of a forklift operator. Forklift operators have to be careful not to go beyond what forklifts can only carry and consider, at all times, the forlklifts weight capacity. Forklift operators must also know how to drive and handle forklifts rear steering wheel effectively. Driving a forklift is easy and can be compared to driving your own car in reverse, meaning forklift operators should constantly steer to make sure he is moving in a straight line. Forklift operators must also be aware at all times of the forklifts ever changing center of gravity to avoid dangerous sharp turns and to avoid going too fast. Before anyone can operate a forklift, he has to be fully trained a licensed.

Forklifts have significantly lessen the stress of warehouse work. Because of forklifts, it is now possible that a single person can move the heaviest of cargos at once. Properly-maintained and safely operated forklifts will surely make lifting and transporting cargos of your company infinitely stress-free.
